they start the expensive upgrade route, and then there is no going back. unless you are prepaired to loose a lot of money that is.

It's a free market, and people are at liberty to sell or trade-in their LP12s, as you did. The fact that the LP12 still seems to get right up people's noses after 30 years is a testament to how good it is.

thats not really the only logical explanation bub. I first heard the lp12 15 years ago and couldnt believe how over hyped it was - thats what got up my nose. It seems to be a religion.

    Understood.

I am unable to explain the technical reasons why there should be such an huge improvement in the L2, but to my ears it sounded clearer, crisper, more vital and alive: small sounds became more apparent as the noise floor seemed lower. It was, simply, better.

    Rudolph

AFAICT you have not heard the L2 and so are unable to judge its merits relative to even the L1, let alone cabling.

    Regards

Could be cos they actually enjoy it ?
Don't know how one component can cause so much vitriol.

People have LP12s because they are happy with them, if so then why upgrade and get on that path ?

This may sound weird but there are people who are happy with their systems regardless of what others may think of the brands in question.

I'm Linn / Naim / Leak / ATC / Mana, and despite the online persecution of four of my five brands - the Leak seems immune for some reason - I'm delighted.

it was an A/B of the Lingo 1 vs. the Lingo 2. IMO, a big upgrade that made me reach for my wallet and give it a beating. I sold my 10 year old Lingo 1 for the price I paid for it... hurrah for ePay.

The problem with the LP12 is that it looks dated, compared with the more modern decks. People judge hi-fi with their eyes, and want something different, which is fine.

You should see the old Leak Troughline. It's far older than the Linn, and looks like a manky old mess, but it's still the one to beat.

I judge only by the sound bub.

I am sure it can be beaten by good modern tuners. The modded ones still sound very good though I have heard.

Never heard a better deck than my Linn, never heard a better tuna than the Leak, which has the Tim de Whatsit bits in it. This doesn't mean better things don't exist ... somewhere.

As I said earlier on, there's little point in generalising about "the LP12". They are not all the same.

My deck was arrived at with incremental stages. Started off with a £700 basic back in the late 1980s, with Valhalla and cheap cartridge: upped the cartridge a few times ending up with the Akiva: Ittok to Ekos then upgraded that to Ekos 2 spec: Valhalla to L1, to L2: Cirkus bearing... the biggest actual hand-in-pocket moment was going from Arkiv to Akiva: net cost £1200 after trade-in for the Arkiv.

If I was looking to spend that sort of money in one go, I would of course listen to a range of other decks. But the approach I have taken is, as I mentioned, incremental, and each step improved - IMO - the sound my deck produced.

    Think that makes sense....

i agree people look at it and say yuk. but there is more to it than that, take the thing apart and have a look at it. the motor is under the platter for gods sake, that i a disaster for feed back to the cartridge, i needs to be away from the cartridge not under it. the arm board is mdf and the important part. the arm to platter part is pressed steel. on a real super deck that is cast alloy or carbon fibre

Well, clearly not. My LP12 (albeit modified) is silent.

    So what?
