Thankfully I've been very lucky with the hifi I have bought - being quite glad and happy with it.

The Theta was bought off ebay in an attempt to try and get the DVD2900 to get better cd sound (it's good as is and sacd is excellent on it but the cd doesn't out do the MIMIK) I wanted on all encompassing digi front and. Sadly I still prefer the Mimik for cd only so have too many boxes still.

Although 90% of listening is now through vinyl.

the best sound i have ever ever heard is vinyl replay. on a rockport. truely awesome sounding, as they say the source is the most important thing and i aggree, spend a lot on a proper record deck arm and cartridge ,and you could run it into 300 quids worth of amp and speakers and get a great sound. far better than some high end cd systems i have heard

I have about 50 sacds and think it is much better than cd. The Denon replays these really well and I find the sound more 'analogue' like. I can happily listen to sacd - some of the Channel Classics discs are excellent.

Sadly some (Pink Floyd being a major culprit here) are just there to get surround sound and do sound poor - I'm a stereo guy so surround doesn't interest not even for films. Decent DSD recorded disks sound excellent.

a high end cd system will high lite the front end to much, so harshness is high on the agenda

Done properly surround sound music can be very good and involving.

Sadly too many recordings use the surround for gimmicks. I have a Cecilia Bartoli concert on DVD where only the audience is on the rear channels and it is very involving and 'real live' sounding.

Also the room I'm in is too small to do justice to surround - better to have good stereo than dodged surround.

did you read the article in stereophile where I.T. from Linn goes head to head with Wilson's CEO (the speaker manufacturer) and various other hifi people?

    interesting stuff.

personally I feel that I.T.'s arguements that "the system with the best source will always sound the best, because it has the best source" are misguided. There are just too many ways to kill that quality further down the chain. My otherwise not-that-shabby Sytemdeck IIXE sounded dreadfull through the inbuilt phono stage in my old MF integrated. I dont think my newer deck (or any other deck) would fare much better!

Perhaps his comments had more relevance in the 1970's when the LP12 stood out as a landmark product without the competition it now faces.

This isn't LP12 knocking, but I find it a suprise that a company such as LINN which is at the forefront of modern technology in hifi in so many ways... multi-room, unidisc players, active speakers etc have never decided to manufacture a new turntable from the ground up. I wonder what they could do with a clean sheet design?
