Mike - it will be in the room this year too. With an airtangent fitted as well as 10.5. See you there!

Rudy - £7k? Price has gone up since then by £2K. Full price is £10k now.

the beauty of vinyl it is mechanical and engineering plays a big role in determining the sound, where a cd player is just a load of numbers,

I have owned two Gyro's and an Orbe in my time and have to say they are way overrated. I just don't get it. Even the Orbe was easily bettered by my CD player. Even a humble Vpi Scout was better. I would not bother with a Michell turntable ever again.

    No surface noise at all.

Airtangent sound very good but the bass lacks impact and quality. Above the bass they are the best tonearm I have ever heard.

no surface noise? it is strange when you listen to vinyl and there is no surface noise at all your brain finds it hard to cope with.

Unless the volume is at ruinously high level. Mainly due to the fact that the emt is a nude cartridge design with intrinsically low levels of resonance.

IMO the best LP12 these days is fully Linned - Ekos/Akiva/Lingo 2. I used to think fully Naimed was best but either way you shouldn't mix n' match although a Supercapped Prefix is a pretty decent phono stage.

My problem with the LP12 is the same as my problem with Naim electronics - the performance is good but its double or triple the price of meaningful competition.

The LP12 is further complicated by a synergy with Naim amps and an effinity for Mana. Mana complicates matters since solid as opposed to suspended decks don't like it at all, sounding much better on a paving slab or preferably a slab of slate.

As I mentioned, the Linn plays music, unlike some big modern decks. The Gyro is an obvious competitor, much better at image, detail and soundstage but IMO no propulsion to the music. The Spacedeck with Spacearm I found a bit better at everything. The Brinkmann, some VPIs and a WT Classic or Reference marmalise an LP12 of any sort in every area but older Naim amps are expert at hiding the fact.

Townshend seismic sink. Sibilance is fine.

Yes I work in the oil industry.

Alex - have you heard the top vpi? I agree - its is 3 times the price it should be. At the right price it is much more competitive.
