Bub - Setup is geometrical. Limitations are physical - due to the construction of the deck. It never stopped you ;-).

SM - is it a pluto?

What's wrong with the construction of the LP12? Bear in mind that this deck is a modern icon, and market leader.

Resonance. No its a 70s icon. Quality over quantity bub. I prefer a meserati to a ford.

Bub, you've been told umpteen times how much things have improved. I know it suits you to ignore this. The Well Tempered I now have is rather different. Its certainly quaint to think an LP12 with the motor in the wrong place is a world-beater.

Yes especially as its approach to resonance control is the same as a bass drum with a cymbal attached.

"Resonance"? The LP12 resonates, but other decks don't? Maserati/Ford are cars, not decks.

    Come and hear it, Alex.

Its a comparison between "best" and "biggest selling".

Sure all decks resonate - the lp12 just does it more. As obvious on female voice especially.

How do you know that "the LP12" resonates more?

Measurements - HFC once compared linn and PT anni. The results were illuminating in the tech section.

Listening - I can hear it.

You will if you listen to a deck that doesnt have it. Thats the point. Its all relative.

I've listened to plenty of other decks. None has exhibited audible distortion on "female vocals". If they did, they would be wholly unsuitable for a hi-fi system.

Its colouration more than distortion though the linn arms are a bit abrasive.

Plenty of other lp12s or plenty of other decks? Which ones?

Becuase I suspect they may well not be competitive at the price level of the linn setup.

You did well to sell it. It was obviously a dud.

Recently I've heard two Orbes (ha ha), a Gyro/Orbe platter thingy, Alex's WT. Many others, too, over the past 20 years.

with the linn the main limiting factor is it's construction. pressed steel wiil resonate far more than carbon or cast alloy. and mdf is not stable enough to be micron perfect which in a record deck it needs to be. my xerxes arm board dropped 3mm for gods sake 1mm out of true is a dissater for a record deck.
