    That's Sweden for you.

Could we have a breakdown of the areas the SL1200 beat the LP12 in please and a more in depth analysis of the comparison? I am dying to find out, as whenever I have listened to an LP12 I have enjoyed it.

my friend had the dj deck and thought i was mad spending a fortune on mine. he was forever taking the --ss so i said to him bring round his technics and we will have a shoot out.
next afternoon he turns up on my doorstep, then i though oh --it i think he might have a point. we throw his deck on the floor and plug straight into the phono section of my amp.
now the lp12 had ekos, lingo, trampoli, cirkus, arkiv. running into an iso.sitting on a custom made stand.
and he had invited some of his friends to come and listen,
we got the same 2 records out and played them together. then switched between decks and nobody new which was which. and EVERYONE including my mum and dad aggreed that the technics was by far better. i then give up the whole hifi game for a while, but in time got the gyro and i now am happy thank god.

I'm sure you will agree that the above doesn't make sense?

Have you had the chance to compare your Gyro with the SL1200 (actually try the SL1210 - the new paint makes a big difference)?

I remember in the mid 80's to early 90's, how some of the magazines used to plug the LP12. I can't remember the number of times I read "nice product, but it's not an LP12". Every reader's query would get similar treatment - Q. "I am thinking of upgrading my speakers" A. "your speakers are fine, buy an LP12". It was ammusing then and even more ammusing now

It is interesting how fashions change. You now never see hifi magazines recommending it. I guess it's like everything else when it is too successful - you get a backlash.

Rudolph, can you give a technical reason why the LP12 is SO bad in your opinion? Because even the 1976 model I have is well designed and made from an engineering point of view. The principal of the isolated 3 point suspension has been proven over the years, and is implemented in a number of well regarded machines today. I cannot see how you can "seriously" argue that a budget project tt can thrash it - but then you are not serious are you!

i am serious my friend ,do you think i would waste my time talking here? the lp12 is a 1974 design, back then it was king by far and that king status has stuck.
just take one apart and look inside all it is is pressed steel and mdf ,now the arm has to be absolutely perfectly true with the platter. and how can that be when the arm board is MDF, the toleraces on a record deck have to be allmost within a micron. and that cannot happen with pressed steel and mdf can it?

If you contact michell direct you can get an Orbe platter in '2nd' condition (I could see no differences, it looked immaculate to me) for less than £100.

It will make your turntable sound better imo.

i found the basic set up the best one. so that says to me that the deck is the limiting factor in the end result. a good deck will benefit from arm and cartridge upgrades.
    but not on the lp12.

    Hey,

the Gyro is a 1980 design so hardly cutting edge. And it wasn't the best TT on the market even then! Don't wan't to slag off your kit ROP, just get a proper sense of perspective.

The age has no relevance. There are lots of turntables out there with the same basic design. There are people who swear by Garrards, which are a lot older than Linns. Are you saying that all suspension tt's are crap?

It is well known that the LP12 needs to be set up properly to get the armboard level and the suspension moving properly. The VTA of the arm is obviously important, but it can be set independant of the suspension. What is important, is that the deck minimizes vibration and resonance.

no you are right it is not the best by far ,but it sounds good to me and i am very happy with what i have. yes it is an 80's design but they have made some good changes to it over the years, namely the stand alone motor, and the new bearing,.
again just look at the engineering, it is done well, the important parts are solid, i.e the chassy and arm board.

no there are some great decks made back then, but some of the new decks today are simply amazing, the lp12 cannot handle resonance well i think the main chassy is to blame.
pressed steel will ring very easily i think you'll find

If you can't hear any difference perhaps you should sell all your stuff and get a midi as this will sound better than an lp12. I realise than not everybody agrees on what they like but you don't half go on
