Lots of live Genesis CD's on ebay and I presume a lot of these are 'bootlegs'. Has anyone heard them and are willing to comment on sound quality, cost etc?

    Hi Sane4sure,

Had a quick look and there are a number of bootlegs on there. It is hardly surprising as a band like Genesis has been going for a long time with a big fan base. Fans will be interested in live work from the many gigs that they have done. Some people buy them as a momento of a gig they have been to. Some people buy them as they want as much material by a band as possible. I thought it was against ebay rules to sell bootlegs. It's easy to spot the bootlegs. Look at the many Genesis sites for a discography of general releases. A lot of bootlegs are on CDR, some with dodgy artwork. Or they are released on non-official labels.

There are many bootlegs of the big names in the music industry. Some are awful recordings, some are excellent. Depends where they were recorded from. I have heard some recorded from a cheap cassette deck to ones taken from the mixing desk. Prices vary.

I haven't heard any of these Genesis bootlegs.

No problem, I was of course only joking ;) ;) (wink wink, I am only joking see).

I can't help you specifically re these Genesis bootlegs (for that is almost definitely what they are), but on the subject of bootlegs in general I can. You would basically have to suck em and see. Some bootlegs are absolutely superb, in fact in some cases taken directly from the sound engineers desk. Others totally stink, having been recorded from a portable recorder of some sort from somewhere in the audience. Some bootleggers from the audience actually know their craft and can get a reasonable recording put together, but often enough its just dreadful. You won't know unless you get one in your mitts.

Bootlegs are illegal to sell, so I would imagine its illegal for ebay to list, however I'd guess that there's so much stuff going through ebay that unless someone tips em off, they'll slip through the net.

Felt Forum - A death in Anytown '73 is great but the quality is poor.
A Living Story '77 is not such a good album but better quality

I did find a site which listed all the bootlegs and their respective recording qualities but can't remember the URL - sorry.

There's some great stuff out there and the forums are the place to get it!

Try : Burp Genesis and Genesis Trades on Yahoo.
