A sad day for whoever is old enough to remember Manchester United's magician. Probably one of the best soccer players I've seen. Too bad, being Irish, he could never play for England.

I'd count not playing for england as a blessing :D

I'm too young to have seen him play, but still appreciate his genius on the pitch. Off the pitch he came across as a good guy too.

I was going to post something but didn't want to risk it turning into a negative thread along thelines of "self inflicted..." etc...

Some great footage and stories on sky sports news.

    Thoughts with his family.

Last night on BBC News, I heard someone say that if he had qualified to play for England, he might have stayed away from drink. I'm sad his career was shorter than it should have been. A true genius and an idiot at the same time. May he now RIP.

Most gifted player of all time.

He walked into Pixxa Hut in Epsom a couple of years ago,I was in witrh the missus. He was still with Alex and living nearby.I'm not kidding but 3/4 of the blokes stood up,it was as almost biblical moment. It took him ten minutes to sit down because everyone wanted to just shake his hand.

I wish the press would leave him alone, and let him die with some dignity, after all it would be one of the few times he had managed to anything with dignity.
It's a disgrace he was given that liver, and I'm sick of hearing about what a great man he was, he was a drunk and a wifebeater (remember the pictures of Alex Best?) He will not be mourned around these parts.
Sorry MO but I feel very strongly about this

Best was a gentleman and I for one am sad. We all have problems, his problems were more public than some.

I spent a number of years working in Chelsea of all places and enjoyed breakfast with George on many occasions at the Chelsea Kitchen. He was a humble, quietly spoken man who had the heart to come down to the shop one year just to give me a Christmas card. I was nothing more than a shop assistant who enjoyed a chat and treated him as a normal bloke. I suspect had more people treated him like that, he might still have been here today.

    I hope there's a good bar upstairs.

I'm old enough to have been watching football when he made his debut. Up until 18 months ago I'd have said he was the best player I'd ever seen. Since watching Spanish football I now have to say he's the second best. Ronaldinho is better for me. Best could have been the best if he hadn't ****ed his talent away.

But a great job for Northern Ireland! (Me biased?). Memories of the destruction of Benfica in the Stadium of Light and the famous European Cup Final win with Man U. No matter what his personal problems, the man was a genius with a football. Pity he couldn't handle the fame and fortune.

You don't know the details.Alex Best admitted they were both drunk and she attacked him.She has just given a press release saying he was the love of her life.In his documentary, not one person had a bad thing to say about him.Thats rare for someone with such a history, usually there are all sorts of things coming out of the closet. Not with Best though.A universally liked man but all those thsat knew him.If you believe what you read in the press you may form another opinion granted.

Its a sad day for my area as well, he used to live 1.5 miles away in the 70's and about a quarter of a mile away from my mum at the time. A lot of local people still memories of him or people that knew him.

He was a very humble man, he had a flash sports car and fast women but he choose to live with this old lady he lodged with in a council estate. He then built a flash mansion but hated it so moved back to the council estate with the old woman.

I wonder how the ex owner of his '2nd chance liver' would feel.

    Thats the real waste here.

He may have been a jolly nice fellow and good player, but that amounts to a bucket of fresh air when compared with the opportunity he had with a donated liver.

Can't think why people are so sad, so he kicked a bag of wind around a pitch for a while, then decided to spend the rest of his life proping up a bar, got ill, (surprise), got a health organ given to him which you'd think would be a big wake up call, but no, back to the booze and then dies, again no big surprise, if you abuse drink and drugs let this be a lesson. :(

From what I gather, his death was due MOre to the medication he was on following the transplant. Not due to drinking and ****ing up the replacement.

And as someone said earlier, the doctors might be able to cure the liver problems, but they didn't cure the alcoholism.

I am working on th eassumption that he continued to drink on the 2nd liver (I have heard this to be the case).

If Im wrong I retract my comments.

There might have been an element of truth in that but according to some of the reports the drugs he was given after the liver transplant made him more susceptible to infections.

His death was very similar to my grandads, he had secondary liver cancer and they ended up having to remove most his liver, he had 30% liver left, but that was still damaged. In effect he had 10-15% liver left.

He died of mutliple organ failure as a result although it all happened within a week, a week before he was driving all the over the country.
