Best is a disgrace. Apparently I've got to stand silent for a minute tomorrow out of respect. Why does a drunk and a wife beater, it wasn't just Alex by the way, get this sort of deification? I'm sure there'll be plenty of people booing around the country.

As an aside there's a girl at our school, who due to a degenerative liver condition needs a transplant, she's been waiting 3 years. I don't know whether liver tissue has to be matched like some others, but I can't believe how easily Best got his. He did drink afterwards and was in and out of the priory countless times.

I'm disgusted. I turned the radio off on the way home I couldn't stand it. It'll be St George next, patron saint of wifebeaters and drunks.

I'm sure there will, but it will still be a very small percentage of those that aren't

I'm sorry for his family too, but I'm TOTALLY with Lord on this.

I drink a fair bit on the weekend, I've been known to dabble in naughties. If any of my organs bugger up, I don't expect a replacement.

Why should a known booze hound have been given that chance - I mean, he was boozing even AFTER they'd given him those anti-drink pellets in his stomach.

For some reason, Best's always reminded me of the song "Fifteen years" by the Levellers.

We should not have to have a minutes silence. We didn't for Jonnie Haynes and he played for England, if he's Northern Irelands best ever player let them worship the drunken sop. If the fans of ManUre (copyright disney 2005) idolise him then fine they can stand. Why should the rest of us. He was nothing more to me than a ****head who received many column inches in the Sunday Tabloids. No-one was silent except for us and West Ham for Mark Vivian Foe, and that was a tragic death.
It'll be the noisiest silence ever at Eastlands tomorrow, it's City v Liverpool. Neither of them will be quiet. I expect it'll make the headlines.

You mustn't boo - Mick Parry doesn't like it. He believes you should observe the silence.
Why don't you observe it but with your back to the pitch?

That is exactly what I am going to do Bob, I'd planned that. Hopefully I'll be able to talk those around me into doing likewise. We're right behind the goal, so we might make motd.

Why don't you chant "scum" as a way of introducing yourselves.

To those of you who have not sinned

Who've never hit a woman nor caused one grief
Nor driven while one over the limit
Who've never succombed to temptation nor suffered addiction
Who've ridden the lens of intense media spotlight without breaking sweat
Who through your talent and application have brought great joy to millions
Or while not having great talent, looks or wealth never envied those who did ...

What an honour it is to share this forum with you.
    RIP George

Indeed, how gratifying it is to know we are in the presence of such morally incorruptable individuals.

He brought pleasure to many people,he will be remembered for that.

And, shall we see if the Vatican can rush it through.....

Saint George, I can see it now.
If he gave you pleasure fine, he gave me none, was a drunken tosser from what I can see, made a lot of money, enjoyed himself and now is dead. Why do I have to mourn him. I find his lifestyle reprehensible, and some of the decisions he made despicable. Yet tomorrow afternoon because he played for The worlds greatest football team (trademark Disney corp) I have to. Let those who want to mourn him, let those that don't don't. But don't force anyone to do what they don't want to do.

There are levels of sin - and abusing someone elses liver has got to rate pretty highly. No?

there are those who think of him poory, those who think of him well.

For me his death is just a point of general interest, nothing more nothing less.

I dont mourn the death of people I've never met.

He was a bloody amazing football player though.

Just had a peek at the BBC website. The story is the headline in both general news and sports sections. That seems to be overdoing it a bit, or perhaps it's just a slow news day.

I can't ignore it though can I. I've got a season ticket at City, so tomorrow I'm expected to stand in silence to commemerate a man I feel absolutely nothing for. Why should I have to do that? United should do it, Northern Ireland can do it if they want, but why should every premiership club have to do it. I suppose Fulham may want to do it, but he was damaged goods when he got to them.
It just strikes me as one more false outpouring of grief, like Diana, the Queen Mum and now our beautiful ****ed up Georgie......

    Lordsummit,

George Best may well have been a drunk, have wasted most of his life, and miserably failed to fulfill his potential, but the fact remains that he accomplished more in a few short years, and touched more people throughout his life, than you or I could hope to manage in two lives.

It is for that reason that he deserves, no demands your respect tomorrow, and if that fact escapes you, then I do have to wonder.

AH I'm not advocating mourning, merely respect when due.

Must say I'm with Active H on this one. Everything GB did was for himself. Had more advantages than most of us put together - and wasted it. Why then is "respect" due. So he could kick a ball about. Big deal! If you respect that then good for you, but there are many people who deserve a good deal more respect than GB and get completely ignored.

I think the media coverage of his illness and death is excessive, and it is the same excessive media coverage that has followed him since he started his professional career - now that's pressure of the most intense type. He was a footballing genius proclaimed by all the greats who folded under the pressure, expectation and condemnation of our ridiculous media circus, that continues to exert all it's cretinous energy in hounding our stars to this day. Granted, he could have handled things better, but don't be too harsh.
