Just a reminder that with less than 48 hours to go, you can still go over to www.globalvote2004.org and vote in an alternative US election. The results will be published after the polls close in the US and will hopefully send a message to the American people.

If you happen to be one of those poor oppressed individuals, please do the right thing on Election Day. It's your only chance to rejoin the global community.

Problem is, Merlin, many of them don't want to hear the message.

I'll be in Cincinnati in one of the swingingest states for the rest of this week. I'm working hard at finding something nice to say about Bush, just in case. I got as far as "he's got a full head of hair and all his teeth", and then broke down.

Great editorial in today's New York Times. Vote for Bush! it said - but George Herbert Walker Bush. It brought out all Bush Sr.'s good qualities and suggested that you vote for the candidate who was closer...

    Good Luck Tones!

I find the States that are going to go to Bush ( Utah, Texas,Alabama, Missisipi etc etc) tells us a lot about the kind of idiot that could just get another 4 years for Bubbleya.

It's going to come down to Florida again. Am I alone in thinking the American democratic system is flawed? Surely the popular vote should prevail in the Presidential election?

Er, no you're not. In fact it's a disgrace. And this is the country that purports to teach the world about democracy.

Funny one today; a couple of American friends have received postal ballots - two each! (I know you're supposed to vote early and vote often, but...). Moreover, one of their sets of ballot papers had been partially prepared by hand.

I wanted to vote in that site you suggested but after some thought maybe even they should be allowed to vote for their own choice. Everyone in their own country should be leave to decide own their own leadears. It is their choice just as it it ours. If they make the wrong one so be it as long as they do not try to cross the borders. Remind me to make sure my own registration is up to date. It will be our turn in UK soon. Maybe even sooner then we think.

Problem with a site like this is that it's the anti-bush brigade (of which, I'm a fully fledged member, don't get me wrong) that will be passing it around amongst themselves. Although it doesn't pertain to support one candidate or the other, it's another blatant "the world hates Bush" piece of publicity. Most Bush supporters won't have heard of it (Merlin, if you thought most of us didn't agree with your politics would you have posted this?), and if they have they'd ignore it as an insult.

Therefore the figures are pretty much meaningless.

For what it's worth, you might want to know that in my 7 weeks here, I've yet to meet a Bush supporter. But then, in the most liberal place on the planet I guess I shouldn't be surprised!

The stats are bizarre in that Bush's highest vote (37%) is from the middle east! How the hell did that happen?

    Great result!

Shame the rednecks don't approve or care.

But if history teaches us anything, then they bloody well should do.

Can someone explain to me how a president supported by the minority inflicting his religeous beliefs on the majority differs from the agenda of those he seeks to remove in the interests of democracy and freedom?

If Bush gets another four years, maybe the more liberal states should apply for independence and sign up to the European constitution :D

So, here is your correspondent, reporting in from Cincinnati, at 8.20pm on election eve. The TV channels are packed with advertising, the Bush camp seeming to have the most maudlin (Bush comforting young girl who lost a parent on 9/11, complete with saccharin commentary). Do they really fall for this stuff? I'm afraid they do...

Are you saying that world terrorism will stop if Kerry is elected?

Steve, I think Julian was referring to Christian Fundementalist terrorism in this instance.

    steve,
no, i'm saying that with bush at the helm of america there is little chance of peace. after all he's (in is own words) 'a war president' and if there isn't a war going on he'll damn well make sure there is one soon.
to be honest kerry is probably just as bad as bush (he is american after all) but at least he can just pull the troops out of iraq without it being an admission of failure / idiocy / corporate self interest.
    cheers

Even if Kerry wins, US and UK troops are likely to be in Iraq for the forseeable future, I fear. The war's not over by a long stretch.

I wouldn't want to see an immediate withdrawel of all troups from Iraq either - I can't see that leading to a desperately stable situation  .

I suspect we're talking years, and many more deaths, whoever wins the election.

Having got rid of the Taliban, Bush's great legacy to the world has been to create another Afghanistan in Iraq. What an arsehole.

Now, now, Ian. You're grossly misrepresenting both the intentions and character of Bush. I can assure you that the US troops will be out in months rather than years...

...He'll need them to invade Iran.
