Does anybody else have one of these yet? I have got my account a few days ok (its handy having contacts) and I think its brillaint, no large adds, its very fast and you get 1GB free stroage space.

I am not sure when its being launched yet, but I have managed to get an account as an early beta tester.

    www.gmail.com

It stands for google mail and is google but for emails. The interface is virtualy the same etc.

Careful with Google mail - they're going to scan your mail and look for keywords in order to send you targeted advertising (amonst other things).

If you want the best e-mail service there is checkout FastMail.FM . I've had an account for a couple of years now and it's simply excellent. No other e-mail service comes even close.

If anyone doesn't want to go down this route and use mailserver that comes with isp (as I do) but I also use mailwasher, run this before opening mail prog and it will read mail straight from server. you can then add friends or blacklist sites etc, also has database of spammers, but costs a bit for this so I don't bother.

This is free for personal use for 1 account (not hotmail) but for a modest amount you can upgrade to pro version that can csan unlimited accounts and hot mail.

It is not only you that give up your expectations of privicy but the people who you are in contact with as their email addresses and text will also be taken into the machine. If you were to contact my via gmail then our emails would no longer be between us, my privacy would have been set aside without my permission. IIRC this point is being debated in the courts of California as we speek.

But the great thing about Fastmail is that you can pull in mail from all your other accounts via POP3 or IMAP (and even the proprietary Hotmail protocol) and then apply all the great Fastmail features (spam filtering and advanced rule based procesing) to all your e-mail.

Mike you can do this with Mailwasher pro ($40)and then only download the ones you want, i don't even D/L the ones ZG sends me I just view them and then click hyperlink, then I delete them, you can also, add domains/addresses to frinds or blacklisted lists, and you can bounce them if they have return address, there are spam tools built in that are more powerful, but these are 3rd party and have a sub cost(i only like paying for software once) then just download the mail u want, they also have an interesting prog also $40 called benign this takes out even those 1 pixel files in some jpegs on any mail thats downloaded, i used the trial version for a while but have been to mean to purchase it, it was very unobtusive, but very powerfull and was quite frightening what is actully hidden in some mail, i think i've just frightened myself into buying it.

Oh and ps this means that you don't have to give details of mail addresses etc to any 3rd party.

If they just display a banner ad in their own web mail client to people silly enough to use it then that's fine, but if they start spamming the recipricants of email from users of their service then that's bang out of order and has to be illegal.

Well guess what turned up in my email :-

an invitation to create an account.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Larry Fine has invited you to open a free Google Gmail account. The
invitation will expire in three weeks and can only be used to set up one
    account.

To accept this invitation and register for your account, visit
    https://gmail.google.com/gmail/xxxxx

Once you create your account, Larry Fine will be notified with
your new @gmail.com address so you can stay in touch with Gmail!

If you haven't already heard about Gmail, it's a new search-based webmail
    service that offers:

    - 1,000 megabytes (one gigabyte) of free storage
    - Built-in Google search that instantly finds any message you want
    - Automatic arrangement of messages and related replies into
    "conversations"
    - Text ads and related pages that are relevant to the content of your
    messages

Gmail is still in an early stage of development. If you set up an
account, you'll be able to keep it even after we make Gmail more
widely available and as one of the system's early testers, you will
be helping us improve the service through your feedback. We might ask
for your comments and suggestions periodically and we appreciate your
help in making Gmail even better.

    Thanks,

    The Gmail Team

all my email accounts at pipex ones (i can have 12) plus one hotmail.
and i use www.pop3now.com to access them (5 at once) from remote locations. (there is pipex netmail, but that's one account at a time, i.e. login, logout, login, logout .....) pop3now gives u 5 in one window. used for a couple of years, pretty good. when u send email, it comes from your isp email account (somehow ?)

My guess its a marketing ploy to create hype for the product. If this is so it has certainly worked.

They claim it is because it is still under development and is currently beta and hence is not public... erm
