Just in the cause of science, I wrote down what they found.

    w32 randex /SdBot.80384.6 / CodBot.Z.

Didn't say if the CodBoT was battered though.

    Anyone know what these are?

from what i can gather you either love it or hate it.

ie if it works fine you'll love it because it s comprehensive...but if it screws up you'll go off it big time.....

    :(

I'll endorse the first two suggestions:
    Get AVG
    Get a Mac.

I'm using AVG without problems now (lots of them with Panda); I'm getting my new Mac next week. :)

Ideal ... if this suits. For most folks, it don't. It's amazing how nasty things can/are linked to apparently 'innocent' Sites.

Better to be protected than not, strikes me as sensible - like sex really... .

    keep the phase

any zip.rar.tar file i didnt request, any html or part html file, any executable of any form, any office doc with macros or nay file with active content.

i never download free apps that don't also have a version i can pay for.

i don't open emails from senders i don't know or which have topics that are offering me anything.

i don't file share, stream, emule, or any of that crap and it suits me fine.

that may all be a little too prohibitive for some people, but my laptop is my business tool, and i simply don't want to hand it's control over to some virus app that kills the speed of my pc and takes over my hard drive.

AVG is certainly v good I agree.

I used to use McAfee largely because they are a customer of ours so we got it for free, but I moved to AVAST and then NOD32 (which isnt free)

NOD32 seems to top the experts charts for effectiveness and uses the least system resources in the process. Is pretty cheap too.

    Well you're lucky.

Trojans can be extremely deceptive and if you get one your AV doesn;t pick up resolving it is hard work. Six months ago I would have made your kind of comment, then had a Trojan/Spyware issue which McAfee didn;t spot. Neither did Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Windows Defender, AVAST, or online scans from three other vendors.

However Spyware Doctor found it as did NOD32. This idea that clever internet users don't get affected is not factual.

i don't think its luck its about systematic and making the right decisions.

thinking about it another help is not having anything in your startup, i fire off all the processes i want running by hand.

not letting application autorun on start up just keeps all your network processes clean and ensures there's nothing open with backdoors that can be used to access your pc.

my processes box in task manager looks minimal to say the least.

David, by streaming and emuling i mean all the file sharing applications that people use to download media or music files from peers.

Or running NOD32 and kicking back with a beer whilst the evils of the internet are thwarted.
