Taking photos of boxes BEFORE pick-up is an absolute must.

That saved me over a grand when they tried to turn one of my boxed scm35's into an accordian. The buggers would have taken it all the way to court if it wasn't for the photo. I recall them saying that the packaging had been used before so it was not good enough. They obviously expect people to get new boxes from the manufacturer each time somehting is shipped anywhere...

    Quick thread revival here.....

So, does anyone have an overall recommendation for affordable and reliable couriers, or are they all a gamble? Every time I see this discussed there's always a horror story about each company.

I've just bought a pair of Tannoy System 10 DMT's (yep, fleabay ) and I need to sort from this end as the guy didn't really want to post them but was prepared for me to arrange collection - he's in W Yorks and I'm in Somerset so no personal pickup possible. They'll go in two packages at about 21kg each. I just want them to arrive safely, but half the reason he didn't want to post I feel is that he's not up for super-heavy duty packaging. But, they were an excellent price so thought it was worth the risk, especially if I could find a company who wouldn't chuck them around too much!

pharos international are fine - I;ve used them a couple of times...just make sure you fill the form correctly or you could get billed by the actual courier too...

There's a very well established market for antiques on eBay, and a number of companies have sprung up to surface the demand for delivery. A lot of the sellers of antiques on eBay do not offer delivery, but will recommend one of these couriers for the customer to arrange pickup and delivery at their own cost.

I bought a table once and it was delivered in excellent condition. I helped the guys unload it from the van, and everything in there was very well packed and strapped down. Only slight problem was that these guys tend to wait until they have a van full from area A to area B before they will deliver, so in my case it took about 3 weeks before they were ready to pickup from the seller. Keeps the cost reasonable though - it was less than £50 for a table to be delivered from North to South England. Unfortunately I can't remember their name.

Given that these companies are used to dealing (carefully!) with antiques, they might be a good bet. Try a google search, or even better if you have the time/inclination, look at eBay auction sellers with good feedback and see the firms some of them recommend to purchasers.

Yes I like to use them. UPS do the actual leg work, but UPS are the best so far that I have used.

Decided in the end to go for the safest method; I undertook a 500 mile round trip and picked them up myself. Well, they were an absolute steal at the price I paid, and the petrol only cost twice the cost of a courier, which all in is probably still less than 2/3rds their true value. As an added bonus I made a weekend of it and visited a friend who co-runs a studio so got to hear what these babies sound like in their intended setting!

    :)
