Google Earth is seriously impressive. Some US cities even have 3D buildings (but they're just blank shapes, not textured), such as LA, Chicago, New York and Washington. You will also find ultra-high res mapping in these locations (were you can see the cars clearly). Also, check out the Hoover Dam.

I only discovered this a week or two back - I'm not sure how long it's been about, but hardly anyone I've shown it to had heard of it for whatever reason.

And yes, it is awesome. If your graphics card and web connection are up to it (not too difficult to be fair), get downloading right now :)

I seem to live in one of the areas that has a hi res view in the UK - I can see my car on the drive. Have also found the house I'm staying in on holiday next week..

Some of the stuff in the US (Grand Canyon, NY, etc) is just unbelieveable.

If this is freely available on the web, I can only guess that the serious gear is registering the colour of my eyes as I look out of the window.... :D

Where I work is right on the edge of the high-res mapping (as in one of the two buildings on the site is high-res, one isn't) around manchester:

I don't want to give a detailed of view of my house as people might be able to guess where I live to easily but you can just about see my road from this image.

I am too the north of it. The river you can see is the River Mersey flowing through Sale and Chorlton Cum Hardy

Here's a bit of the scary hi-res mapping and 3d buildings. This is the whitehouse and front garden:

    What's at 38 55' 16.20" N; 77 03' 59.63" W ?

    Pixellated.

As every school kiddy in the USA knows that 38N 33W roughly equates to District of Columbia, then I expect 38 55' 16.20" N; 77 03' 59.63" W to be somewhere (spherical trig not withstanding ) close to the greyed out bit of the map just below the word "Washington".

I suggest you now let Lloyd Grossman tell you "Just who lives in a house like this?".

I think the greyed-out bit is the Pentagon, that isn't pixellated. The bit I mean is North of the river.

Something naughty happening there? Am beginning to believe that the main "axis of evil" is good ol' Uncle Sam.

Has anyone taken off from Washington National Airport in M.S. Flight Simulator ?

That's an interesting experience and lots of aircraft to choose from. I recommend nothing bigger than a 737 otherwise directional control around the state buildings is just too hard.

B.t.w. If you are heading for the Congress/Senate instead you have to be quick in your right turn and line up again, or you'll be past it before you are alligned.
