I'm prompted to think aloud about an itch, or maybe an idea of an itch.

I'll leave my sig. on for this first post.

I dont have a pre and was once encouaged to add a passive, removing the digital attenuation from the Dax Decade. I'm considering doing that now.

I deliberately avoided going back to vinyl but still have some and an old Systemdek so a pre would be good - unless I'm so set on the digital that I feed that through the ADX but I guess I would need some gain to do that.

I'm considering upgrading the DVD player, but maybe that's another forum.

    'xcuse the ramblings.

And I do recognise that the Epos speakers are prob the weakest part of the system. I like them, but then I used to say that about my Celestion Dittons (whence the monica).

Are you sure the attenuation in the Decade is digital? Audio Synthesis tend to be very purest when it comes to such things and I always assumed the volume stage would be a fancy resistor ladder or something.

I've got one of their early passive preamps myself, a PAS 02 stepped attenuator:

It's pretty much 'no preamp' from what I can tell, I like it a lot.

Well, if you were to take my advice you would probably invest heavily in a vinyl front end and buy an active pre-amp.........

I'm fairly sure that volume control for the AS Dax Decade is fully in the digital domain. I recall discussion on that a while back.

It's well weird! The vol knob is dual-concentric, the back bit giving 3db steps, the end 0.5db. I guess that means it's going through two resistors per channel rather than the usual one for a passive, but it certainly makes for lots of fine adjustment even with a power amp with a lot of gain like my 303 (0.5v for full output). It effectively has 138 steps!
