Like a rolling stone by Bob Dylan.
    Satisfaction by the Stones 2nd
    Imagine by Lennon 3rd

Mmmm Im sure we can do better than that
Here is my two pence worth
    Stairway - Zeppelin
    Ball of confusion - Temptations

I could go along with Imagine as one of them.

OK, if we're expanding the criteria to proper music :D then I'll nominate "E lucevan le stelle" from Puccini's Tosca. Never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and simultaneously bring a tear to my eye.

This is going to sound so obvious and I hate myself for always saying it but everytime I listen to it the more I am sure of my opinion. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart. The song gets stick with Joy Division fans because its their swan song but take away the fact its played some where every time I go out its brilliant song. I was a folk gig a few weeks ago and they played a country song, it was love will tear us apart! That is how versatial this song is.

To add to its appeal it isn't as well kown as songs as Imagine or Mr Tambourine Man.

Coming a very close second is Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence.

Don't know about the greatest song ever written, but in my book Frank Sinatra doing I've Got You Under My Skin is a contender for the greatest ever performance of a song.

Thats a brillaint song, and prefer the Band's version to the one Travis did. One of Dylan's better songs.

The weight is absolutely fabulous one of my faves, along with cripple creek another gem.

Was gonna be predictable and pick a rush song, but 2 spring to mind as good written songs that haven't been bettered, one is "The Joker" - Steve Miller, or "I believe in Father Christmas" - Greg Lake

These things are so hard, i can think of a hundred or more that I would never get fed up with. just thinking, "Freebird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Don't Stop Believin" - Journey, "Bad" - U2 not MJ, the list could go on but I'll end it there.

    Just thought of some more

"Video Killed the radio star" - The Buggles, not meant as a Joke

Echo beach _ Martha and the muffins IIRC

    Funky town-Lips inc

    Just remembered my favourite

Either Joan Armatrading - Love and affection

    or

State of independance, not sure which i prefer though original Jon and vangelis version is excellent, but so is Donna Summer/Quincy Jones cover, mmmm

    Finally

Sate of Independance it is. Best song ever written.

If you like State Of Independence, seek out Sao Benitez' Brazilian and African fusion version (from the Elemental album). IMHO, it's a refreshingly emotional version.
