well guys, since i have being attending "and working on" the hi-fi indrusty, have seen the shows slowlly detiorrating year by year i have now seen the end of an era, very dissapointed to say the least, i took along one of my customers to meet a manufacturer, having sold him one of his high end t/t's what i mean by high end £1799.00 had the cheek or nerve to say to him infront of me that he is discontinued that model and he has a new one coming out that will sound better at a retail of £1000.00, that made feel like shit,
    later i will speak,regards

I'm not saying your sonic description of the focals at the show is wrong. I just know that paired with something like a good valve amp they can sound totally different.

^^ OK - they sure had a very "tight" sound, regardless of the dryness - it would be very interesting to hear the Focals with valves. Aren't they a tricky load, though?

That is bad - name and shame.

I don't do shows anymore, they don't demonstrate anything meaningful though 30 years ago they did enable me to find Bill Beard and Allison speakers. New Krells - rubbish, old Krells sublime so can perfectly understand feedback there.

However - I am curious - did anyone have any observations on the new £8000 Music First preamp perchance (notwithstanding my caveat that it's difficult to evaluate in hotel rooms)?

Oops! I can see that was embarassing, but it doesn't seem right to condemn the whole Show because of one person's insensitivity.

I thought the Show overall was to a high standard, in terms of facilities, room sound and the range and extent of equipment on demonstration.

Also, all day parking at Heathrow for £6 was most welcome! I used to pay nearer £20 when the HiFi News Show was the only one there.

I agree. It can be damaging to make statements about stuff that doesn't sound good at a show. I would hesitate to condemn anything based on a show performance.

I would have to agree that the show was a bad joke really, and I very much doubt we will see another one next year. It's not just customers saying it - many exhibitors were really pissed off with the lack of organisation and poor promotion.

If the best sound most of them could manage was what they produced, they either sell crap that makes the decline of the audio industry all to understandable, or the rooms are so poor that they would have been far better off having a static display.

I couldn't stay in most rooms - the sound reproduction was so poor. Was it Avid Nando?

That sounds a bit depressing. I have no experience of selling HiFi or in the retail industry generally (apart from 6 'happy' months as a full-time fried chicken specialist). However, I can't help but get the feeling that it could all be done so much better. The ship appears to be sinking but nobody is doing anything about it.

If the views here are anything to go by the industry has a real problem relating to it's core customers. I can't understand why anyone would want to turn up and demo their stuff sounding poor in a crappy hotel room, or not let people play some of their music on the demo equipment; especially given the huge numbers of trade and enthusiasts who attend the show.

As consumers we are probably all a bit unrealistic in our expectations but there doesn't seem to be much 'meet you in the middle' from lots of manufacturers / dealers. The best ones in my limited experience are very friendly and go out of the way to assist; these are the ones I've bought kit from. There are some positive comments on this thread but most posts highlight a fair number of serious flaws rather than the good bits.

That said, it would have been interesting to go though, if only to meet a few people from ZG in person.

The sound in the room in general was good compared to most. But i can not say how good that one component was though as i knew none of the other components.

    Hi,
I agree with jerry and Tarzan, however have been to better previous shows. May be all of us should get together and have our own hifi enthusiasts music show. you in or out,
or in different. May be just another crazy idea. How do we keep the flame alive.
    Keep on Rocking

The problem is they have been reinventing the wheel for 20 years and there comes a point where most people can see through the pretence. The ship is sinking because it hasn't got a port to go to and no passengers.
