    gary,
basicly it's similar to the old 3 speeders but has 14 gears all accessible via a grip shifter. you can change whenever you like and it's instantaneous - no pedalling necessary unlike a conventional deraileur setup - it's also impervious to mud and crap you get during the winter which makes cleaning it a doddle not the bataan death march cleaning my old spesh was, just hose it down (not with a pressure washer tho) and oil it up. maintainance is an oil change one a year and that's it. the down side is that it's hideously expensive compared to even an xtr conventional groupset but should work out cheaper in the long run as they are pretty much indestructible according to those who use them - even the sprockets wear on one side, then you flip 'em over after a couple of years and wear out the other side. it is very noisy when new though - kind of like grinding coffee by hand in some gears - silent in others aparently they take about 1000km jsut to wear in.

    tony,
the brake hoses are oem hope hose upgrades, i could have had zero feel plastic jobbies or uber bling goodrich but went for the hopes as a happy medium.

one nice surprise was that fox have stopped making the vanilla rl forks (i think) which were originally specified so they put on rlc's at no extra charge. very civilised lot they are in zummerzet.

Hmmm, tricky one, especially as it involves gear(s) of another (but not incompatible) faith. We're not loooking at a cardinal sin here, so I'd say 20 Hail HOBBYs, 20 strokes of a Nordost cable of your choice and a major hi-fi upgrade, to be undertaken within 12 months.

As you say, beats cleaning, maintaining and adjusting derailleurs.

    Nice one julian!

Assuming that they've actually built the damn thing today (as they hadn't when they said they would yesterday) I should be picking up my new front wheel that will allow me to install my new Magura Louise FR 210mm front disc.

Now you've got the bike it's time to get up this way and come for some real riding :D

God, this makes my (stock barring brake pads and tyres) Spesh Hardrock look like the toy it is ;)

How much are those hub gears? I fekking HATE derailliers... Mine could do with cleaning (again!) - too damn unreliable...

    Disk brakes are cool!

EDIT: Julian - very nosy question - but how much does a swaaaaeeeetaaah ride like that cost? I bet the hubgear alone cost more than my entire bike!

I wouldn't have thought you'd get much change from £1k. Way out of your league Dom! (unless you sold the Naim!).

Hub gears may seem more atractive, but from what I remember they are a pain to setup and a bugger to keep working, (I going on old Stanly Archer gears here, like on my Brompton), noisy and have a really irritating ticking sound, plus you have to stop pedaling to change gear, etc, I'm assuming though that Juilians bike uses a completely different system.

I really like the idea of Discs, and Hydrolic brakes, definantly the way to go. I'm thinking of getting a new bike that these will be high on the list of requirements, but can't see many Hybrids with these systems. (yet).

I wasn't take the mic over the "hope" label, it just made me laugh as it seemed a strange logo to put on brake parts! They want to partner with "pray" so thier logo could read "Hope & pray" I'll get my coat.

Hope have been around for years... brought out some of the first discs for mountain bikes (both mech and hydro, but they haven't made mech in years).

There's another option for hydraulics on mtbs (and road bikes) though:

How does the Rohloff compare with derailleurs?
And is the additional weight noticeable? Or is there no more weight, what with losing the cassette?

From that the rohloff weighs around 2kg. A decent conventional rear hub weighs 380g (Hope XC steel), Cassette 350g (XT 9sp), Mech 250g (XT, X.9). You'll have a longer chain (about 100g extra) and additional front chainrings (120g) and front derailleur 170g as well, so the weigh penalty of the Rohloff is about 700g.

    700g, eh?
That's about 3/4 of one of my home-made local organic beef megaburgers!
But is Rohloff worth the significant extra cash?
I've got XTR on my Cannondale - brilliant gears, but constantly need adjusting.. In fact sometimes need far to much adjusting..

On my previous build bike my ESP 9.0 went for 5 years without needing to be adjusted once. The shifter is worn and cable outers aren't right on the new setup so it's out of whack... along with needing a new chain and cassette.

Try an XT. XTR is not meant to be fit-and-forget (in the same way a ferrari isn't as maintenance free as a Lexus).
