I've got a serious problem with spam. I use Eudora as my email program and I've been getting literally hundreds of "mail undeliverables", "Failure notices" and similar. The messages all tell me that I've been trying to send various emails to unknown users without success. The body of the email "I've" been trying to send is:

How the f*ck do I stop this - I did a Norton virus scan only yesterday?

    Anyone?
    Thanks

Perhaps a phone call to your ISP's customer services might be in order, maybe they can help. Only thing i can think of is to scan your computer with a few different Anti-Spy and AV programs, maybe your machine is infected but your current software hasn't/can't detect it just yet. Quite often AV software manufacturers will let you do an online security scan without actually buying/installing their full program.
I use BT Internet and credit where its due, their servers seem to snag everything for me - touch wood....

    Hi 7_V,

Apart from Norton do you use any other software for spyware etc?

Steve, I don't think you are sending spam. I believe this is just a method they use to get you to look at the email in the hopes you will think 'I don't remember sending an email, what was it?' I get a few of these. Annoyingly I now get about 20 spams a day where as only 1 year ago I had none! I don't go filling my email address in to any websites either. I suppose they might be coming to me because I have a few registered domains.

My Dad gets about 400 - 600 spams a day! Sucks being a webmaster!

Just the other day we noticed the email server was down and found that it was being kept busy by some prick trying to hack in to it trying every port. We found their IP address and crashed their computer lol! That was fun!

Yep, looking at it again in the fresh light of morning that is correct. If you google part of it you will come up with references to others having the same problem.

I had this happen on a work mail account. Some spammer put my email address in as the return address for bounced undeliverable mail. Your machine is most likely OK and not infected as you aren't the one sending the emails.

For about a week I was getting 10,000's of returned messages a day then it tailed off slowly. The account was by then unusable as it had ended up on a blacklist and also there was no way to know if it would happen again.

The solution was a new email account and luckily at that time we didn't do too much business by email so it was easy to give the new address to contacts. It wouldn't be that easy now.

More alarming was that some messages were people replying to the Spam asking for more info about the 'product' that was being 'sold'. Nutters.

I suppose that's why some companies send millions of spam emails. They're trying to identify the small percentage of nutters they can exploit.

By the way, did I tell you about my mother's late uncle in Nigeria? Apparently he had a considerable chunk of money that he ....

Just check though, there are a few trojans around right now which go into your address book and spam the hell out of your email addys.

Yes, that's true but in this case none of the addresses were known to me and when I Googled the problem, as hifikrazy suggested, I discovered others with the exact same symptoms.

Interestingly, it's dropped off to just a handful so far today.

    Thanks
    Steve

These kind of emails can be very confusing. Genuine full on spamming can be quite a subtle beast, imagine a big list of emails addresses where 500 emails are sent to address 2 appearing to be from address 1, then 500 to address 3 appearing from address 2, etc. If your email address is in the list, you will then get non delivery / failure / rejection notices. You can even end up on blacklists even though you never sent any to anyone.
