I should also have stated the paralell assembly will have a resonant frequency at which damage is most likely to occur ;). Amplitude strongly dependent upon effective mass and compliance.

Even if the cartridge is at no risk - it doesnt mean it will work well. I would imagine dynas are light and low compliance so it should be fine.

I know I should know better than to continue arguing with you, as I know only too well that I won't ever have the last word, and I'm sure you're doing this out of slightly twisted sense of fun, but I can't resist -

what are the two most likely frequencies at which the cartridge will excite the sled (the sled running on the quartz rails being the effective tonearm)?

Nope. I thought about this for about a minute.

root (k/m) for the horizontal and vertical modes.

Not knowing what k and m stand for in your formula, I won't dispute it. My reasoning is simpler : 33 1/3 and 45 and harmonics. Now when I look at the wavelengths of that, I can't see how the sled will go into oscillation.

Incidentally, its not as if the NINETEEN PAGE Souther/Clearaudio tonearm manual is much help - an excersize in baffling technospeak adn tpyos....

I think the CA PT is a simplified version of the Souther TQ-I, as a few screws/levers have been removed at various points.

Bit of a nightmare to set up, this one. Thinking months rather than hours :(

Should've bought an SACD player instead!

No you shouldn't. The Evolution is a great deck. The arm is complicated to set up compared to a normal pivoted arm, but once it's done that's it for ages.

I'm sure either the dealer or Clearaudio themselves can point you in the right direction - just try dropping either (or both) an email.

That will be the driving frequency but not the resonant frequency.

Consider a chandalier vibrating in the audio range and shaking at a few hz when driven by an earthquake at a few tenths of a hz.

Was joking Griffo - like I said, no way I could let it go at the price. The arm is built like a tank and once calibrated should stay calibrated!

I've e-mailed two AD's and CA themselves for guidance on the cart and certain calibration issues...
