Well that has blown it... LITERALLY
Made some cat5e pre/main jumpers yesterday, seemed fine.
Made some cat5e bi-wire cable today and it seemed fine...
but then I turned the volume up and it smoked the NAD.

    Guess my plans are now:
    1) Test / buy an arcam (any views on the a65+ vs older alphas?)
    2) BUY some speaker cable. So not happy tonight. FEK.

PS: It wasn't the workmanship - honest!
    PPS: the speakers are front-ported

I don't want to get into a cable debate here but seriously don't bother with that BS if you're into rock.

Most of the source material is so buggered up at the recording stage that the best you can hope for is to get a system that boogies, especially in the bottom end.

Just keep experimenting with the things that really matter, i.e. speakers/location & amp. You may find the answer in the strangest places.

It sounds like your speakers are responding to a better amp.

It doesn't have to be an Arcam, it doesn't even have to be new - quality amps make a big difference - I reckon that's what you've heard IMO.

yoikes technobear... excitement is all relative - I still remember sitting in Audio Excellence to listen to my first real stereo way back then and getting goosebumps at the clarity and punch it delivered. The very same NAD 3240PE that I have just blown, a Revolver deck and a pair of Celestion DL8s. Man was I excited, that rig really delivered for me (and I guess I can't complain because on reflection that must have been about 18 years ago!)

Thanks for your reply anyway though..

ya wanna rock baby. Go for Bryston or Krell. Some Legacy or PMC speakers a Theta DAC and CEC transport and ya think your in the band. Just my 2 cents.

Bryston do indeed do something special, especially in the bottom end. A bit out of the price range though.
