Tell him to try Chappell of Bond St. They're based in Wardour Street just off Oxford street. They stock quality instruments at good prices and they also offer the 'take it away' scheme which is a 0% interest finance scheme paid back over 10 months.
I bought a very nice acoustic guitar from them a few months ago and couldn't be happier with the price and service and it was nice to be able to try it out before i decided to buy.
They're main stockists for Yamaha and do carry woodwind and brass instruments so they should be able to help him out.

I've also dealt with GAK before and they're just as good and stock more budget conscious stuff. If your friend is after a cheap instrument he'd do well to look there. Their stores are based in brighton but they do a lot of trade by mail order.

Best place for woodwind in the South East is John Myatt in Hitchin.

Look for shops which stock Selmer or Yanagisawa saxophones in particular - they're expensive, but said shops will more likely know more about the instrument in question. They'll usually have a good stock of secondhand stuff aswell which will have been looked over by someone who knows their onions.

Another shop (where we tend to get most of our stuff from) is Dawkes in Maidenhead.

If it was my money though I'd go to Myatt's every time - Hitchin's on the Kings Cross rail line to the north aswell if that helps. :)
