I have a SHARP mini component system and the spec says:
    OUTPUT POWER RMS 240W (120W+120W) 10%THD
    RMS 160W (80W +80W) 0.9% THD

    What does this (THD) mean?

    SPEAKERS 6 ohms
    SPEAKER input power 120W

I have 3 sets of speakers in different rooms passing through a COMMTEL 4-way splitter which lets me play any combinations of the 3 sets of speakers.

I would like to replace the system with a small micro system. Can you advise please on what spec I should look for to accommodate the 3 sets of speakers?

Also, can I replace any of the speakers with 6ohm or 8 ohm speakers and do I need a certain input power?

Thanks for your help. You will see that I am not an expert!!

any good mini system will perform well with 6 or 8 ohms, input rating on the speakers is a value close to peking, mini systems i would recomend are TEAC or DENON, imo.

I'd second Nando's recommendation- you won't go wrong with a good Teac or Denon system.
In your position I might be tempted to buy a Linn Classik (original, go for vgc 2nd hand from e-bay/Gumtree) unless the footprint of a mini system is important to you.

The Classik's not exactly big! Only a couple of inches wider than say a Denon DM31*
    and the same depth.

*which I might add has survived 7 years of pure abuse in our kitchen. Bullet proof.

having read the thread again you mention "MICRO" ! NOT MINI OR MIDDI? can you be more specific, if you can acomodate the linn that would be a good move.

Any system that is rated at 80watts RMS ~1% THD will do the job okay. More watts is okay too. Just make sure you only select one pair of speakers at a time. Driving more than 1 pair will give the system a very hard time and could make it go in smoke. To be honest 50watts is probably fine.

Less is fine too, depending on on how hard you work the amp - it would be helpful to know which speakers you are using.
Also have a look at the old "What are watts?" thread.
