Anybody else buy the Sunday Times yesterday just to get a free Hendrix cd?

    lol

It's a live album of their last British concert.

It's playing now, and it's quality.

I love hendrix, he's not only the best electric guitarist (please don't argue about that), but unrecognized for writing some excellent songs too.. definately not just a riff merchant.

So, anybody else get the cd, and what's your favourite hendrix releases in general?

My hero deserves a thread on ZG I feel.

jh is the most over-hyped guitarist in history, his songwriting skills minimal and his records are virtually unlistenable, only of some historic value perhaps. avoid hendrix!

I think bat is either on a windup or (hopefully) in a tiny minority. My vote (should we turn this into a poll?) is for Hendrix being one of if not THE greatest guitarist ever.

Yep Hendrix did it for me, particularly the set at Woodstock where he performed The Stars and Stripes.

Think there may be a age divide on the guy though. Think if your over 45 you might appreciate him, under 45 well I am not so sure?

Did not get the times though ............ unfortunately

Hendrix was a showman, not a musician. Burning guitars, extremely tasteless hippie clothes, playing with tongue, etc. Very famous artist but NOT a great one. And he had absolutely no voice.
    I am 44...

I'm 41. Bat has no taste, Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarists ever, obviously.

The high points for me are Band of Gypsies, and "1983, a Merman I Should Turn To Be" from Electric Ladyland.

Actually I never cared for the guitar burning or other similar artistry with tooth paste tube and wotsits.

Rubbish :) If you don't get Hendrix you don't got soul.
Perhaps one of the few people that actually deserves the status awarded to him?

I think it's worth remembering that Hendrix died when he was only 27 and that he released only 3 official albums of studio material, plus a few singles, in his lifetime. Most of the rest of his legacy is comprised of semi-legit recordings with either under-rehearsed or semi adequte backing bands. Technically his playing was pretty advanced and his showmanship is precisely what you'd expect from someone who'd served his apprentiship backing soul revue artists. I like the 'Chas Chandler' LPs precisely because he was enough of a hardarse to insist on tight arrangements and on keeping the solos short. All killer, no filler. Much of the live stuff (a few exceptions) though is hopelessly self indulgent - the bands just sound like they are trying to keep up, twenty minute versions of Stone Free, Noel Redding just flailing. No thanks. But like I said, he was 27 and had a lot to prove. It's just sad that he didn't live long enough to grow beyond the guitar hero cliche that was symptomatic of the time.

Drat and Double drat, We dont get the Sunday newspapers here on our small island. I have just taken delivery of Hendrix's Axis Bold as Love a favourite of mine from the late sixties and it still wows me yet - he sings with his guitar - The lyrics to his songs on this album are, well, to be kind, not really brilliant, but it is still a great listen. The engineering is so obvious it can make you smile especially if your into wearing headphones!

Well said 'JohnFromNorwich' (it's the quiz of the week!,...I was raised in Norwich too by the way but moved away in '86).

Hendrix did not live long enough to make this kind of debate unquestionable but there's no doubting the man could play. I also rate Stevie Ray Vaughan too ;)

Walter Trout is playing a local venue to me soon (The Stables in Milton Keynes), it's early October but I can't recall the exact date, possibly the 11th. He's worth a look too.

All this talk of guitars is makin me itch for some synths now,...lol

    Thats amazing, isn't it?

In just a couple of years he did ...... what I have difficulty putting in words.. redefining the way a guitar is played.

SRV and Walter Trout have been mentioned, amongst others. They wouldn't have had their technique, skill, ability without many many hours sitting learning Jimi's music.

    All hail JIMI!!!
