Has anybody ever had one? What was the operation like? I am worried I may have one so I am going to see the doctors on Tuesday morning. I am a bit scared though.

Edit - What a scary number to post the fact I may have a potientialy (in very rare circumstances) life threatening condition. I am even more scared now. ::mad:

Yeah I know its pretty riskless, it just becomes a risk it gets big enough to cut off blood suply. I am more worried about goign to the doctor than anything else.

Had one when I was about 12 months old. Don't remember much :D . Still have a "ladder of stitches" scar near my groin area to prove it though :)

AFAIK a hernia is as straightforward as appendicitis and potentially less dangerous. It's one of the ops that trainee surgeons learn on :JOEL:

Do not worry. You'll die eventually, so why not next week?:JOEL:

Nah, there's no problem. Unless the doctor turns out to be a sadist:cool: It has been known before, you know.

But I would feel confident. Moderately, at least.

Of course, there are all sorts of complications, you know.

Don't pay any attention. I just ruptured a string of my harpsichord trying to tune it and this is probably my way of venting my frustration. A very important string! F# bellow middle c!!!

Really, it is a very minor operation.

Thanks, it is not the operation so much I am worried about its all the other stuff like going to the doctor in the first place. my doctor is female but would rather see a male doctor, can you just turn up and ask t see a male doctor or would you need to book an appointment? I don't want to change my GP or anything.

I won't tell my parents until I have got it diagnosed, just in case its somthing else but 95% sure its got to be a hermia as the symptons are the same.

I shall have to skip a lecture a on Tuesday morning and go to the doctors.

Its only quite small at the moment so hopefully it should be a fairly simple operation. The things I have read they you need to rest afterwards though and resting is somthing I simply cannot do.

Also do you need a general anaesthetic can they just give you a local one?

the resting, well youll feel like youve been kicked in the balls for a day or 2,but the pain killers do work:MILD: the main thing is not to strain it,your not ment to laugh to much ,and you may be on laxitives for a day or 2,again to stop you strainning anything.he was back at work within a week of having the op

Good topic for my first post :)

I've had two hernia ops, both general anesthetic (preferable in my opinion). You have to take it easy for a couple of weeks after.. not much pain, you just feel a big 'tight'.

Nothing to worry about at all.

I can't take more than a few days of doing uni work though or I will fall behind. I suppose I will be fine doing computer work. It just means I won't be able to go clubbing for a few weeks:( .

Does anybody have any idea how long the waiting lists or does this just vary according to the local NHS trust?

Probably varies - good old NHS postcode lottery...

When I had my second teeth op in 1987 (I've had 29 PERMANENT teeth removed in my life and am only 1 short of a full set!) a girl on my ward had had to have a hernia op; sounded painful but she was up and about like 1 hour after she came round.

General anaesthetic is cool - makes you REAAAAALLY stoned for about 8 hours afterwards. It certainly made the last episode of "The hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy" on telly after my op, err, even more psychadelic than it would have been had I been at home that night!

I've often wandered whether female theatre staff have a good "look" when you're in there; the female who was making sure I didn't drink any bathwater seemed curious as well. Blooming paedaphile - I was only 12!!!

No joking aside AT - hope it all goes OK mate. How did you get the hernia??

I went to the doctors this morning. She did an examination and said everything is fine but I do have quite a bad hernia. She has booked for me to see a specialist so I can have the operation done.

She said my passage where the bowls drop was probably weak hence causing them to go in the wrong place. This dosn't surprise me since I have a weak bladder, a weak heart and just about everything else.

She said if I get any pain from it I would probably need an emergency operation because it could be strangeling the blood supply however if not then I will probably have to wait a few months.

I can't do any physical work for 6 weeks afterwards:D This has its major advantages. Mine you its a good job I am a student/web developer as I can carry on as normal, if I was a self employed builder I would be screwed.

I'm not surprised it's weak, if you've got 'bowls' passing through your, er, passage. ;)
