I spent yesterday night at a mates who has the good fortune to have a system built up around Bryston SP1 Pre/Processor 2 large Bryston mono blocks feeding PMC MB2s a 3 channel Bryston doing the surrounds (PMC LB1s and a PMC centre) all running off a Naim CD 3.5 (I think)and a Nakamichi DVD. He also has a PMC Active sub, just in case I suppose...

In surround mode playing DVD it sounds very impressive and LOUD.. I mean really, really loud.

In stereo from the naim it has a very live sound, amongst the best I have heard at very high volumes, like being at a gig!! Seems to sound a bit too lean at low volumes and is very dry indeed.

I prefered stereo mode, surround was weird, bongos behind you and all that....

Seems to me that a better CD front end is in order but I know nowt about them. So, what are the cream of the 3k players right now that my mate should audition hes keen to sort it.

Looking for essentially more of the same but a bit warmed up?

Did I say it was loud, sweet jesus, my ears are still ringing...

    Greg, I did :)

    Other Viable alternitives.

Advantage S1 like Len has, better than the Wadia 301 in the dynamics and slam, but not in the same league else where, but I prefer it to the 301 (in stock form)
The Densen is also good, but check on reliability issues
A Used AA captiol if he's into vinyl
A Wadia 850/860 used a good example can be had for that dosh
A dac 64 and Teac P30 do go well, and leave enough over for a clock mod.
An Ayre cx 7 if your into tonal neutrality.
a Cary 306 is also very good US price used about $3200+vat & Import
Accuphase DPV 65 is also a fair player also.
Wadia 830 is a rockers gem too around the £1200 mark.
Remeber though Bryston is dry, so a player with little more texture in the mids may help, maybe a Meridian 588. T.

Or my Wadia 3200T / Trichord / Wadia X64.4 combo that easily saw off the Wadia 301, ML No 37, NuVista, Naim (the £2k one) etc etc and for sale for £1500; bargain or what? PM me if interested.
