I just realised something, something that thread-owner Corruption mentioned: "what albums/music make your system sing/make you tap your feet" I only recently found out (much to my dismay, because this can only mean further tweaking/upgrading, that when I was with my first basic kit, it was an all-rounder, everything sounded great--to me at least; Upgraded to valve amplification recently, and while it made some music really come alive, depth etc, some music that sounded good before now sound poor on the new gear; learn something new all the time Back to topic, I can't think up 5, but off the top of my head, here's 2: - Getz/Gilberto (the album) - the Borodin works, Polovtsian Dances off of the set of 5 CDs "Karajan Festival", obviously Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic
Ooh I like this thread First post so I hope no one minds me butting in, 1) bang for buck has to be a pair of Rega EL8s for £16 (made me smile when I read spica mentioning the ELAs) 2) John Martyn - Solid AIR (Album) Groundhogs - Scratching the Surface Stone Roses Stone Roses Hebrides Overture - Felix Mendelssohn Leftfield - Leftism Oh erm.. Hullo by the way tom
Just read this and funnily enough as per Spica my fond memories are of my Onix OA21,Rega and Sworsman plus, friend still has the Onix .Great amp still sounds good when I hear it at my friends house.
Now this is frustrating me - mention of my first TT above has set me trying to remember what it was and I can't. Does anyone have an encyclopaedic knowledge of 70s TT's? I think it cost about £17.50 around 1976, came without a plinth/arm etc. and was very minimalist. Square brushed aluminium chassis about 1cm deep, no suspension, and I think the only controls were on and off - a couple of small rectangular buttons at the front left, maybe one orange and one grey? - you changed speed by hoiking the belt up and down the spindle. Ring any bells?
