oops post accidentally deleted by really stupid mod. :S
In the latest HiFi News there is a article on some Welborne Labs 300b valve amps and the reveiwer used some ADIRE speakers. Pretty cheap (hence my interest!)
Jools, second hand is the way IMHO. SCIDB uses Impulses - and these are sub 1k used. Im sure he can tell you more. I enjoyed some lowther acoustas, and they were great, but the back loaded horn design created a boxy signature that would bother me long term. The best stuff is always dear though....vitavox..altec.. tannoy etc. I bet Nick at the emporium has something that would suit in those massive sheds of his. http://www.emporiumhifi.co.uk/Pages/VintagePages/VLoudspeakers.html he does have some Impulses in, but I dont know if these are good ones... IMPULSE H4, new bass and treble drive units fitted , horn loaded midrange 600
Have a look at these.... Have a look at the www.hammerdynamics.com website - might be just what you need. They sometimes come up on audiogon aswell cheers philip
Did see those H4s at emporium but I reckon to blow the drive units on them you'd have to be an idiot and who wants an idiots speakers!!! Shame really as the H4's might be the ticket if I can't find H2s..
No sorry - haven't heard them - there's plenty of info about them over at audioasylum or singledriver website, also a few reviews - on enjoythemusic and sixmoons I think cheers philip
Doesnt the TNT website tell you how to make high efficiency speakers for the Sonic T-Amp? Costs under £100 I'm sure.
Well i have just aquired a pair of NS1000M's from a friend who is off abroad for 6 months. 92db but a bit of a load I think 4 ohms for much of the audio band. Will be interesting to see if I can drive them with my Lavardin. Those Hammer dynamics look very interesting and I've mailed for prices, unfortunately I have no woodworking skills so I will need to have cabinets made up if I go down that route, so maybe not. I'm really surprised that nobody took over the mantle of Impulse and makes decent horns for reasonable money..
Hi Joolsburger, The Impulse range were good horn speakers. The company seemed to disappear in the late 90's. I remember they even brought out a turntable. The H2s are a fine speaker well worth looking out for. As Bottleneck has mentioned, they can be had for under a £1000. They have popped up on ebay has as other Impulse speakers. I don't know if you have seen this site for details on Impulse speakers http://www.acoustica.org.uk/impulse/impulse.html. Hope you find a pair. SCIDB
Hi Jules. I tried to quote your post, but pressed 'edit' instead of 'quote' SORRY!! this is what I meant to do ............. trying to find anything decent SH is really hard, I'm two years into a search for some H2's. ooh look what I found: details on SCIDB's link. http://www.thehifistudios.co.uk/SecondHandProducts.asp http://www.vxm.com/21R.88.html get that cheque book out!
Hmm. One interesting thing here is that they do their own 12" dual concentric for a 96db sensitivity DIY speaker ($369 for the kit inc crossovers and build your own cabinet) - a knock off big(ish) Tannoy DC- sounds like an interesting idea.
hifi studios is a good dealer too. And easy to find and park [unless they've moved again..] I have bought kit from them before, including my CD player. Straight up the A1, turn off near M62 junction or thereabouts. Its a barn conversion off the Wakefield road IIRC
Not anymore though, just noticed some bastard has crashed into my car and driven off oh well no speakers for me £500.00 excess!
Joolz, bad luck on the car; that always sucks. Whereabouts are you? I've H2s and H6s if you want a listen, & you'd be welcome to borrow the (smallish) H6s to try at home. martinclark AT stridetreglown DOT com
A kind offer but I have to pay for this car now...Maybe in a month or two if its still open I'll take you up on it, thanks. Basically all best are off for a while....bugger.
