been with a friend today to sevenoaks in exeter looking for a new turntable to go with a tag mclaren 60i amp and acoustic energy 120's (project - phonobox SE).

    budget about 400quid

the best they had there by far was the RPM6 but was ex dem and the tonearm cable has now gone bck to be fixed. he can buy this for 410. have just found for 405 new off the net.

is there anything else around this price range worth considering? thx

    Hi

If you have some movement with your budget you can look at

    The Rega P3 @ £298 inc arm

    The Rega P25 @ £619 inc arm

The Nottingham Analogue Horizon @ £528.75 inc arm

The Michell Tecnodec @ £575 arm extra.

These decks will offer you a good benchmark & very sound quality. I quite like the Horizon deck. You do need to budget extra for a cartridge.

These decks may be found 2nd hand or ex-dem for less. From what I have heard of the RPM6, I think most of the above should see it off.

You could look at the 2nd hand market. An LP12 or a Roksan can be picked up for under £500. These will make good starting points.

Go second hand would be my advice, the more expensive Project decks are not very good VFM IMO, and tend to lose their value when the time comes to upgrade. A Rega P25 should be easy enough to find at that price, easy to set up, comes with a good arm (RB300) that can be itself upgraded by Origin Live or Incognito. Stick a nice cart on it and it'll easily better a Project.

Yes the Rega 3,with the mods sideshowbob mentions then add a shure V15 cartridge at £325,its a superb MM the kills of the Goldrings with ease, then latter you could change the glass platter to acrylic from www.sheeraudio.com

Now I come to think of it, the P25 comes with the RB600 arm, which is basically an RB300 with better quality control and improved wiring.

£450 could get you an LP12, but s/h prices have been quite high the last couple of years and there's a lot of dodgy examples about, so you'd need to be a bit careful and make sure you could check the deck out before buying.

just put the name of the deck you want to find, most of them are there. I had a look and theres loads of LP12s, Roksans, Townsend Rocks etc all in your money budget

or theres emporium of course. they have a kuzma stabi/stogi for 750. its a shame its over the budget.
