    Has anybody heard Horning Speakers?
They seem to have an uncoloured Lowther (!) full range driver as a mid, plus decent bass extension for the money.
Might be tempted by the Agathon if I wasn't worried about 97dB efficiency and 600watts of Bryston!

Leonard, I'm thinking you may be better suited to the big tannoys. I'd worry about that power with those lowthers too.

Heard a pair of Horning Hybrids... very lush horns, excellent midrange. Great when I listened to acoustic/jazz/vocals but I am not sure how well it'll be suited to other forms of music. Sensitivity 100+ as well, so easy to pair with SETs.

    Hi

The Horning do have a very good mid range and good tonal qualities. I have an older pair knocking about which I used before having the Living voice. Mine were the Agathons.

    Dean!
What were the Agathons like with funk and rock?
And did they do bass, and live gig scale?
Or are they best with nice lady and guitar singing miserable songs about her unhappy childhood, and how it led to her failure in love because all men are bastards?

I chatted to the UK importer yesterday, who said they're not "clinical like modern speakers" - so he's saying the right sort of thing there - and they do "serious bass you can feel", and "they'd be happy with 600+ watts," as he's used them with a Bryston 14bs, and the latest version is £6900 new. (Much cheaper 2nd hand!!!)

    Hi Leonard,

The version I use are different to the current versions. They worked well in corners. They didn't have the ultimate in twack but were good on bass detail and resolution. Made the music sound good. They did have a good sense of scale to the sound. But I wouldn't say big PA sort of scale.

Worked well with soul funk, reggae and rock. It will be interesting to see how these newer ones perform.

A personal friend of mine is the US importer for Horning and I've heard the Alkabiades, Perikles and and Agathons. The Hornings are, as you can see from their design, not your typical horn speakers, mostly because they are not driving the Lowther full range. There is a tweeter and bass drivers for the frequency extremes. The Hornings are wonderful speakers with very good bass. I do caution you to carefully match your room with the appropriate Horning model as they can overload a room.

I have heard the Hornings driven with Kondo and Tron, and imminently will take my Tom Evans Soul S15 by my friends for a spin. The Kondo has that ethereal quality through the Hornings that is lovely, but I do not think I could live with it long term. The Tron was better as it had more verve. I think the Soul will really take the Hornings to new levels with its speed and dynamics.

The Hornings were just displayed at the High End Show in NY and consistently received rave reviews from the audio press.
