Breathing is an automated process; you can consciously affect the rate/whether you DO breathe or not, but as soon as you pass out from lack of air or stop thinking about it, the "automatic" breathing mechanism of your brain will take over and keep you alive.

This explains why Jade Goody, amongst others, isn't dead.

Useless Information Dept. I'm told that, at one time, Castrol had a vegetable-based oil in its range, but only as a transmission oil. It was used in Peugeot 203/403/404s, because they had a worm final drive instead of the usual crown wheel and pinion type. As I understand it, the pressure on the teeth of worm drives is much higher than that in crown/pinion types, and the vegetable-based oil stopped the drive ripping itself apart (the pressure was such that the opposing teeth would briefly weld themselves together and rip bits out of each other).

This was an issue in Australia where these Peugeots were extremely popular as cars for the Outback - the huge 16" wheels and the worm drive gave them enormous ground clearance (more important than 4WD).
