I am half lucking for a new turntable, I've had my project almost five years now and its been used at least an hour a day since so its probably not as its best anymore.

Would a tunrtable like this be a significient upgrade over my project? I am listening to so much vinyl recently that I need a proper turntable.

The Goldring is, I believe, made by Rega for Goldring, and is basically a stylistically slightly modified P2.

You probably need to be looking at something in P25 territory to get a worthwhile upgrade from what you already have, the cheap Projects are pretty good IMO.

I thought it looked very similier to the Rega's (the switch gives it away).

This is why I have kept it so long, it is a very good turntable especialy when used with my Rotel pre amp and headphones, it blows away my more expensive CD Player.

I just don't think I am ever going to have any money to replace it, and I have been extremely unlucky with second hand turntables so I want to buy new. I suppose I better save up a bit, I just don't want to end up with a turntable which costs as much as the rest of my HIFI put together.

I paid £250 for my Townshend, now that was a significant upgrade on the P3. There's one going for 350 at PJ in Guildford I think

It's a CUT PRICE P2 - the arm's held to the deck with 4 screws for a start. You could easily get a NAD533 for less money second hand - this is identical to the P2 barring plinth colour.

Dom, according to the review I read this morning (HFC) the GR1.2 has four fixing screws for the arm, whilst the GR2 has the proper mega-nut thing. IOW, it's pretty much a P2 with a decent cart thrown in for good measure.

Mental note to oneself - LEARN TO READ!!! You're right, Dunc!

OK - that's almost identical to a NAD/P2 then!! Nice cart too :)

I am not sure what to do now I suppose I should really audition some but I will have to measure it against my project. If its only a marginal improvement its not worth it.

I know I always a bit dubious about replacing my Sony CDP530 by my Marantz CD6000 OSE LE EU Gold (a mouthful) sounds a lot better than my old Sony.

Also my parents need a turntable so my Project would be ideal for them.

Edit According to Superfi the stylus and cartridge are both worth £100 each, I am not sure how much the arm would cost, the tunrtable basicialy costs £65 exluding the stylus and cartridge.

Personally I'd get one from ebay. You'll get a much bigger improvement for the money. I wouldn't think the GR is a massive improvement over what you have, I'd invest the money in cart & phono stage if you don't want to buy a use deck.

I am using a very nice Rotel 870BX premap for the phone stage, not sure how it compares to modern stuff but the electronics seem very high quality.

It sounds a lot better than my Marantz phono stage anyway.

Upgrading my exisiting deck is actually not a bad idea, I would have to look into that, I am not sure how much weight the project arm would take.

I used to have a systemdek like the one in your link, well actually mine was an IIXE I think.. not too sure.

It was alright. I think you need better before you can see significant improvements happening.

Thanks its hardly surprising I have kept this deck so long it seems impossible to replace without spending a small fortune. I should probably keep it then until I have enough money to buy a real system.

Now you haven't told us which one of the Project tables you already have - but I agree with some of the other posts here saying that you will need to get a better table than the Goldring in order to improve on the Project. Personally I have a Project RPM 4 and I think that it's pretty much in the Rega P3 league ... one of these days I will do the comparison with my brothers Rega P25 which I expect to be better - but maybe not that much. In short, I think your Project is fine, and if you have been treating it with love and care I think it still has many running years ahead of it.

I've got a very nice Michell Mycro for sale (hint hint).

Similar era to the systemdek (I think) but a heck of a lot better looking.
