If a palmtop is what you want then I reckon IBM X Series, but as with all (I think) palmtops you have to suffer 1024 * 768 resolution. Personally I prefer something a bit bigger, but no bigger than 14" screen @ 1400 * 1050. In which case IBM T43. I dont want to sound dogmatic, but having tried lots in order to form our company policy we really couldnt beat it (in our tests anyway).

Never seen / used a blackberry, but I like the idea of a pda phone, I have a Dell Axim X5 PDA which is ok, but its Windoze based which is a shame, hoping to get a Sony/Erricson P900 on Monday, I say hopefully cos the guy at work has promised it to me for the last month and each time I ask he's got a different excuse why he's not bought it in, I'm a little worried I'm not going to get on with the screen size. Been on a course this week and the tutor has a Palm Trio(?) phone, very nice, let me play (ohh err) with it for a while, maybe if the P900 never happens I'll look into those.
Is the Nokia 6680 the one that can run Linux or am i thinking of something else?
Sorry this is turning into a pda thread, apologies for the hi-jack.

Oh before I go, for the benifit of the Mac brigade, just cos you buy a PC laptop, you Don't have to run Windows on it, I have Suse 9.3 running very happily on my P2 notebook thanks, even runs the wireless network adaptor with very little setup issues.

I have an elderly IBM ThinkPad X20 (P3/600mhz, 320MB RAM, 20GB hard disk). Although the battery is now shot, the machine is small enough to take with me if I go away for a few days as a temporary dumping ground for digital camera photos or a quick e-mail check. Only problem I had with mine was a dead modem (replaced under warranty). The laptop has been carted around on trains/planes and still works to this day. A bit sluggish, but I'd certainly go for IBM again - the build quality and level of support is superb (being able to find drivers for a 4 year old laptop is useful when you need to rebuild the OS install)!

When shopping for a laptop recently I thought I had main factors that I cared about more, but really, because it is all built in one and not really upgradeable you need to have everything you think you might need.

I suppose the main factor is that I like a laptop which is a bargain! Other factors are that it is quiet and very powerful and not missing things you take for granted. A lot of the cheaper laptops seem to have external CD-Rom drives now if you want a 12".

I recently bought an HP NC6220 for £530 brand new and it is really good. The only thing it was missing was a Firewire port, but it said it had that in the advert, I just got a PCMCIA to Firewire card and was sorted. Its got a great screen, tons of power (Centrino 1.89GHz) and its not too huge at 14". It does seem a little heavy after a 12" iBook though. Do check it out, I spent a long time finding which laptop seemed the best for under £1K.

I bought a Sony Viao about six years ago .. The Viao lasted well - but I think that with laptops its worth getting the extended warranty.

What model in the TX series are you looking for?

Well it doesn't matter really they all have the same design (I would choose it blue). What is important to me is that it doesn't weigh a lot seems strong, good picture for watching DVD and digital photos and the battery does last up to 7 hours.
    :)

I too have never seen a laptop capable of consistent 7 hours life, fair enough if you don;t touch it whilst its on ;)

unfortunately that link does not work.

as to Sony Viao TX models, which I also like for their small size and weight and the promised longer battery life (made all the bettwe as the dvd and cd play without booting WindozeXP, the TX1HP seems the cheaper but is 1.1GHz, the TX1XP is more expensive but with 1.2GHz. not sure of colour!

I agree. This "all day computing" nonsense is fine if your working day is only 5 1/2 hours long.

    small factoid:
Advanced carbon fibre monocoque was developed in 1962 by
a team led by Dr William Watt, assisted by Bill Johnson and Leslie
Phillips, at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Farnborough, Hants.
I only know this because Watt was the father of my partner's friend at school.

clever stuff this carbon fibre. interesting that its being applied to lap-tops. I wonder whether its getting cheaper.
