It looks like sometime soonish that New LLU ISP to offer 24meg broadband as offered by BE Unlimited may be visiting an exchange near me but what can I (legally) do with a pipe this size right into my living room? First thoughts are bragging rights along the line of mine is bigger, wider, faster than yours; or lets download films, dvds, cds, porn whatever but their are already hardly enough hours in the day for the net and a social life with real people so I'll end up internet rich and time poor.

    Any ideas?

2 meg at my home seems fast enough for all the things i do - internet surfing basically, oh, and overnight support for the business for whom i work.

was in france recently with a 20 meg line - webpages were noticeably quicker, but for general surfing, i'd say stick with 2 meg until 8 becomes the norm.

A couple of friends of mine in Japan are on 40Mbps, and pay less than I do for their connection.
I guess that would be OK.

I have 4mb currently, though is not down to the limitations of the server suppling you with information?

Absolutely... Even on my modest 1 meg Telewest service (which appears to run at 1.5 meg most of the time), I'm finding that a lot of the sites I download from aren't maxing out my connection.

So what would you do with a 1000 meg SDSL connection  :

Once you have had a look at the Visible Earth and done a few of the 400MB specials then what? Well you could move onto something new like the NASA WorldWind project (thanks to sgt Rock) so I still treckon Ill think about using it just because I can!

I'm sure someone will find us something to do with all the extra b/w in a few years time. Could make it possible to do more jobs from home etc.

I am still on 512kbps, I really need to get BT to upgrade it, I am paying a fortune for such a slow connection.

I was thinking more of uploading to / running servers. With a 8mb upload you could do a decent server for non-intensive webpage's. Or access any of your files from anywhere on the planet without waiting years for them to come through.

Hi Harry, ya I'm on Telewest like you, i max out at 120kbps when downloading with getright, which isn't bad, but it costs us £25 a month which I think is pricey compared with what else is about, we are stuck with TW as we're not on BT lines, so they can sting us for as much as they like, I'd be happy on a 512 service unlimited for £15 a month. If I want anything like Linix distro's I can download with works 10Mbit connection and burn to dvd, save me some money.

Well CD is 150kbyte/sec, which requires a 1.5Mbit connection.
I guess that a really big pipe would allow DVD or maybe even HDTV streaming over the net if you could find a server capable of supply it.

My 1Mb service in Portugal is being automatically upgraded to 8Mb in August - no extra charge
