My dad probably pays about £400 including servicing, MOTs, labour, parts etc.

I am not sure if this is a lot for a 85K miles 10 year old car or not.

That's perfectly reasonable... I have a japanese car so labour rates at the main dealers are BIG money, and no one else seems to have a clue (ok, the main dealers don't either...), so rather more than that for my 97000 mile 7 year old car.

Frightening to think that total ownership costs must be about £40 per week minimum for a car:

    deprec ~ £500

    rtax 150

    Insurance ~ 300

    Bills ~ 400

    Fuel ~ 500

Probably you guys with knobmobiles are more like £100??

We are trying to get back to a 1 car household [2 adults]

true, but when I moved to where I live now - which was beofre i passed my driving tests, I was paying about 85 quid a week getting to and from work, so, I guess I'm one of the few people who have benefited from driving a car, in financial terms anyway...

Garage bills for me is only the cost of the MOT, as I do all the work myself - I dread to think how much I actually spend on parts myself doing the work, mind you...

I'd guess around £600. £300 for an annual service, and then bits like tyres, seems to be 2 a year, brakes will need doing soon, they ain't cheap things for sure

Last year my car cost £70 for it's Main Dealer annual service, plus the MoT, which seems to be about £40ish now!
Next year it's the big one, with all diff oils being changed for fully synthetic ones - comes to over £200..
    Still cheap for a 20v 1.8 turbo 4wd!

Probably averages well over £1000 a year. Last year was particularly painful as I had to replace the VANOS variable valve timing system on the M3 - £1300 for the part and about £300 labour (at a specialist). Then shortly afterwards needed to replace the cats @ £1000 for the pair (£2K if I'd got them from BMW). Throw in a complete overhaul of the intake system which includes synchronizing the six individual throttle butterflies (a time consuming and tedious job) and that was about £3K in just one month  .

In general though the M3 is a remarkably cheap car to run for what it is. I'm still selling it though :)

Now that I don't have an Escort Cosworth any more,my bills are well below £2k per yr,in fact comfortably below £500,so I'm happy in one respect!

    Ouch!

Mine so far is around £800 per year. My local main dealer labour rate is £98.50 + VAT per hour, so it doesnt need much to go wrong for the bills to add up! I only use them because they are within walking distance of home.

The garage my dad uses charges £25 an hour plus VAT labour :)

I reckon cars don't get any cheaper than my dads, especialy since its an Escort and is worthless anyway, we paid £1600 for it, its worth £800 now and we've had it 2.5 years.

    That's a matter of opinion, Dev ;)

The main reason mine is this much is that after 4 years there is a monster service which requires all fluids, spark plugs (x12, a bitch of a job as you cant access them), filters and I also had the pads and discs changed. Cost a fortune. Touchwood, nothing else much to do for the next few years except standard services.
