This is standard practice for companies like FedEx and UPS. I had an invoice once from TNT three-months after the fact which took me a while to decipher what this sudden bill was for! The only way to look at it was that I basically got 90 days credit!!!

Hey Saab, don't forget to get a supply of clean anti-static inner sleeves too now that you have invested in a cleanning machine.

I have a Nitty Gritty Pro machine (Nitty's top cleaner), and customers/friends really appreciate not only the high quality clean but new inner sleeves, not to mention that your own collection will benefit greatly as well.

Just dont get the unbranded anti static sleeves from epay, sold as un named nagoka. They are not anti static.

I love it when they write 'Gift' on the box! Nice to know some sellers in the USA have a bit of compassion.

Unfortunately these days 'gift' makes no difference, you still pay import.
It seems the only way around it is if you can prove you resided in the country previous and the item was yours at that time, or if it is a repair/replacement under warranty.

I also received an import duty bill from a courier after a weeks I received a camera bought from the US over the internet. The imput duty was about 3 pounds, but the admininstration charge from the UK courier was 10 pounds plus VAT! A true rip off.

:) Well let me explain further, a lot write 'gift' but also recently a few have just written the value as $10 as well. Coolio. Luck of the draw though. I did have to pay a pretty penny for some motorbike boots from the US a couple of years ago, though I was expecting that. Though the £10 UPS admin fee was a bit rich. :(

If they state the value as under the taxable limit then yes you will not pay tax, wether a gift or not. Only problem being that the item will only be insured at the stated value.

Customs & Excise weren't born yesterday you know and are well wise to that little trick. If they have the slightest suspicion that what's inside the box is something worth more than $10 they will open the box and then they will decide what they think it's worth and you'll have to pay the appropriate duty and VAT.
