I think it was the D200 that I read a review of somewhere saying along the lines of it being suitably well built that if someone should try to mug you, you could easily club them to a pulp with it then carry on shooting :)

I bought my D80 with 18-135 lens which covers a decent enough range. Certainly good enough for me to learn with. It's tempting to splash on faster/bigger glass, but I'm definitely the limiting factor here. Pumping up the ISO is a good enough option for now too :)

Apparently the front element is 21 inches!!!

I wonder if they throw in a free crane with it?

Haha, it would make my D50 look a bit weeny at the end.

Seriously nikon do some serious kit. Even the D50 which was bottom of the pile when I purchased had a proper metal locking ring etc, many cameras do not.

I would say Canon seem to have it on long range lenses, but Nikon are the best for most other things, including wives knocking them to the ground!

..seriously, how do you get on with the D80....my dream camera, with its good big screen + decent view finder (?)

the electronic thingy on my 5700 is not a good idea...but I've been through that before...

    any snags with a D80?

In short, I love it :D

The screen, and viewfinder you mention are both big selling points. The viewfinder in particular is big, bright, clear and really rather good. Just picking it up and holding it, it feels right and well thought out.

...yes thats what i felt about the 5700..an expensive camera (to me) 3 yeras ago. (Paid £600 for it!)

there are issues to it though....

+not sure as the switch gear IS especially well thought out!

By the sounds of it the d80 answers alot of the snags.

I am looking out for a new digital camera at the moment, either a decent quality compact , or possibly a DLSR.
I saw the the Nikon D40 in the shop and it has a lot of appeal to me simply because of its smaller size, especially when compared to some of the competition which seem to be huge by comparison...
I'll probably end up with a campact though.

Trouble with the D40 is that they took the auto focus pin out of it so you cannot use many lenses with it.

This would be a deal breaker for me.

I'd not see it as a deal breaker unless you have older lenses. There's plenty of newer lenses which will work fine with it, and things like VR would make the newer lenses a MOre likely addition anyhow. You can still manal focus with older lenses.

I think the sacrifice is worth it if that's where the savings are.

My nikon 5700 has a lot going for it.

It does feel nice to handle, like mos(?) D40.

My brother got the 8700 'cos he liked mine, its gets a bigger screen (far better).....not sure what else..

the 8800 gets image stablizing, which is a good bet....

I would say they're enthusiasts cameras.....they do have weak spots, such as low light ability (or lack of).....you need to read the manual/+know a bit of theory to find a way around...but there will BE a way around.

Having said that they are probably out of date now but I htink would n't make a bad 2nd hand bet, esp for landscape photo :) ....they are good for that :) nice pics!

MO if you look at the specs, a D50 is better in every respect except a slightly limited range of ISO options and a smaller screen.

Plus they will use 'older' lenses. Though to be fair there are still plenty sold as new without the new focus.

Apart from size and cost, which when comparing against a compact, are probably aMOngst the major considerations.
