I feel I've found my next speaker :D anyone know of a pair??

And then there is the Kite (ca. $12,000), a floorstander only slightly larger than the Shearwater. It sports a deceptively ordinary 8-inch three-way configuration. Then the word ordinary vacates your vocabulary when you realize that its woofer offers 1.25 inches of honest excursion.
    Kite woofer doing 8Hz @ 200 watts
A kilowatt on-board amplifier is equalized to wring a true 20Hz flat out of the bass system. Response trim pots can dial the Kite for an earth-shaking +1dB at 18Hz response. In a canny move, the woofer amp derives a high-level signal from the end user's main amp that powers the anything-but-ordinary 9800-series Scanspeak tweeter and the truly extraordinary 5-inch Scanspeak Revelator paper graphite midrange. This hookup scheme assures correct timbre matching since the main amp's sonic signature is passed on intact to the integral active subwoofer section. With its 90dB sensitivity, the passive upper two-way could be powered with a modestly endowed triode SET. (Tube fiends with a lust for Herculean bass action; keep your eyes glued to this baby!)

Anyone Know where I can find a pair of these :D

Well the bass unit is straight out of a tricked up Calibra :D

Bigger Xmax often means bigger distortion unless some kind of control is applied WM.

I get where you are coming from. You can use that form of biamping with a number of different setups. One of the main concerns is having a transition smack in the middle of the male voice (500-660hz). Can't say I really noticed a problem with the Proacs, but there are thoe who would advise using Class D amps below 200hz.

My new design will have Class D below 100hz, but probably valves above that. Expect delivery sometime around July next year.

Basically, a small bass unit with large excursion, whilst capable of producing bass, needs to remain pistonic throughout it's travel to avoid introducing distortion. this usually means very stiff cone materials and thick rubber surrounds. This equates to a large moving mass which ain't ideal for use in the lower midrange.

The alternative is of course a lightweight paper cone of considerable dimensions with a great big magnet and voice coil. This needs to travel a lot less to move the same amount of air and, provided the cone is sufficiently stiff, will usually provide lower ditortion at higher levels.

Big Heavy cones for VLF, big lightweight cones for LF. That's my personal thinking - but of course the result is less than ideal for the married man with kids.

    Merlin,

The kites have an inbuilt 1kw amp for the bass drivers the 5 inch and tweets I could use a proper valve amp on, Mind you none of the qaud mylarky :D
I think I could cope with the compromise.

Joking aside, it might well be an interesting design Tony.

But you've still basically got a subwoofer mated to a pair of small satellites unless the crossover is around 500hz, in which case that Class D amp better be good. Can you find out any more re. crossover points etc?

    Tony,

Is this why you are giving your Evo the 'heave ho'?

IIRC the high note at the end of "Nessun Dorma" is the B just above concert A, which would make it a shade under 500Hz - generally considered the top of the tenor range for most normal purposes. The fundamentals of most pop male vocals IME inhabit the octave 250Hz - 500Hz (as do most female pop vocals actually - male pop vocalists tend to be very high as a general rule, and female pop vocalists very low, relatively speaking).

btw Tone, your thread title should have been I want to fly like a kite or something similar since the Kite in the name of the speaker refers to a bird of prey and not a bit of paper on the end of a string that kids play in the park with. This is clear because the names of all Meadowlark speakers, and even the name of the company itself, are all names of birds :)

    Michael ,
Pehaps said bird has a piece of string tied to his leg and WM is holding the other end of that particulat piece of string .
Which would then mean that WM was correct .
He would indeed be flying a Kite . :D
