I know there are people in here.. and certainly other forums that seem to advocate the use of IKEA lack units for use as stands for hi-fi kit,

Now im very happy with my new main rack for the cyrus kit.. but as this doesnt have space for a turntable.. i thought i might try this route. Its only a £15 table after all.

but what do people usualy do to it to improve the hi-fi aspect of this table?

screw in some thread inserts for spikes? Add a granite plinth?

anyone got some suggestion... perhaps someone that uses one.

    Hi,

I used a Lack for a while for the LP12. Worked fine straight out of the box with no modifications. The only thing I did to the Lack with the TT in mind was to ensure I had it as level as possible.

    im thinking of buying two....

using one as an extra top.. and having small vibration absorbing pads or something between the two tops.

then putting some spikes on the legs so that i can level it all up etc and make sure its solidly into the ground.

all in abuot £25 worth of stuff perhaps

might sit the whole assembly on a concrete slab too if only to make the whole setup even less sensitive to footfall.

i also have a spare granite slab (argos special) which could be the finishing peice on top.

The whole justification of using a lack as a turntable support is its extreme lightness. Sticking a lump of granite on top will bugger it up.

yeah just gonna get two tables.. and use a spare top as a kind of isolation platform on top of the table. that way the rega can transfer its vibrations into a nice light lack top.

that'll be mounted via foculpods or somesuch to the main table which will be spiked. Keeping external vibrations from reaching the deck

I've never used an Ikea Lack, but I do use an Ikea Corras.
(and from what I've seen on pics in other forums, I'm not the only one  )

Here's a picture of my system as it was last year in September:

    I see it's a ridiculously 58cm's deep.
It seems that most system support these days are much deeper than about >10-15 years ago.

My (Naim) gear is 30cm deep, and most TT's will be around 34 to 40cm's deep, so it would look pretty silly on such a deep rack imho.

You forget lots of turntables have lids that open up and add around another 10cm to the overall length.

yeah not nailing a target rack to my wall.... part of what makes the ikea stuff so favourable is that you can experiment with different forms of isolation but at the same time keep the whole thing visually appealing.

those wall shelfs are the ugliest things i think ive ever seen :)

I dont want to be a party pooper, but I have an Ikea lack, and its just compressed paper with a bit of vinyl-wrap veneer around the outside.. which is why it's just £15.

You can get visually nice wall shelves (like the one at the bottom of the link below), but they do cost more.

I honestly dont believe you'll find an ikea corner table any better/worse than any other bit of furniture.

but that's why it works. Its so vestigal you couldn't get anything lighter.

It works on the same principle as the old torlyte three legged stand that many still regard as the best ever turntable support. I had one under a Voyd and it certainly worked for that!
