I think it goes like this: If item-value stated on label-declaration is over limit and Customs officer has awoken (randomly), then: read value of item off label/shipping document, add any duty, add postal cost, add VAT on total sum, add paperwork charge.

Would be handy to know exactly what the threshold is. £35 would be more agreeable.

On the brighter side, even when hit for VAT (plus) the total cost may well be less than the rip-off pricing of (some?) UK retailers.

Not to mention the "computer-says-no" mentality where UK retailers either can't get you stuff you want - or can take four times as long to fetch it from a local distributor as it would take you to get it yourself from one of the more wide-awake mail order outfits.

yeah, if you're lucky you can get the seller to mark it as a gift or mention a lower price on the package - thats what happened when I got my Nos dac the other week...

I see the 'mis declared value' tip a lot so I should point out this paragraph on the customs website.

The bigger downside to misdeclaring value for me would be to have it damaged in transit and then have no comeback on the insurers.

That would really suck and be far more possible IMO
