It's that time of the year again when the reminder drops through the door to renew house insurance:(

I have large collections of these funny silver disc thingies and wonderous black shiny plastic:D Just wondering whether anybody has insured them as a collection? Less concerned about the wonderous black shiny plastic because of the weight. However the funny silver disc thingies are very transportable!

This came up recently for me, during Semi Cold phonecall, the Insurer said have you anything else of value over £1k?

I thought well.... 1000 albums..... 1000cds, average of £5 a go seems conservative.... gives.. 10k, which seemed reasonable.

The broker shat himself said he would have to refer back to the insurer, and has never come back to me.

This is clearly something anyone with a similar collection should consider seriously. I have always overlooked it, but have made a note to talk to my actual insurer at renewal time.

I remember searching through loads of threads on various forums about this very topic, when my insurance was due for renewal last September. The name that kept cropping up and the one that I eventually went with was Hiscox.

They offer very decent fully comprehensive cover for contents and buildings, and don't penalise for high value stereo systems or large and high value music collections. Obviously read the small print when the documents come through, though - I did, as did my ex-contracts proof reading girlfriend with whom I live, and the Hiscox policy still looked good to both of us.

m&s are another one that seem to be very good for hi-fi (and bikes) mainly due to the 5k single item limit. rather than the more usual 1.5k

I have all my business equipment insured through Hiscox (also PI and PL cover).

They seem a decent bunch but as with all insurance, you really don't know how good they are until you claim. By then, it's all too late to find out you've got a dud. :(
