does anybody know an easy way to to hide your IP address whilst logging on to a website, without spending money on software?

    thanks,

my PC is linked to a network of 3 PCs, all of which are connected with the same IP address. Will this method change the IP address of all 3 PCs or just my own?

If it means changing the IP address of each PC, could this lead to any problems with the network? Also, how do I find out the IP address incase I need to change it back again?

    Thanks for your help.

Now I'm curious why you'd want to do such a thing...

Especially considering that there's more than one ID that posts from your current ip address, with linked email addresses? We did send you a pm asking about this...

No more there isnt - as I explained previously, feel free to delete the other account, I have only used it once and DO NOT intend to use it again.

In fact, if you would like to know, the reason I want to hide my IP address is a completely different matter, an issue I have with another discussion forum.

According to my computer, and everybody else's, 'the other post' was sent 3 minutes beforehand.

If you have nothing helpful to say in my thread, please keep out of it.

    Regards.

As a moderator of the biggest forum in the world (well one of them) we some times get people logging on using proxies. If we detect this we will keep an eye on them as we usualy come to conclusion that they have somthing to hide.

The best ones are the better who login at work or university they tend to behave them selves :D

Worth a look as this might be the way to go.

This I find rather a sweeping generalization and a stereotyping of a class of person or user that would be unacceptable if the criteria used were based upon colour, race, religion or gender.

Come on AT, as a moderator I feel you could do better than ths.

    Oh,lovely - more pc madness (copyright Mail + Sun ;) )
I think (yes, really) Amazingtrades use of the words 'if','sometimes', 'may' and 'usual' don't correspond with your accusation of a sweeping generalisation.

Auric,my dear chap - can you give me a genuine reason why anyone would want/need to hide their I.P ?

As long at it is legal to do so I think you should have the option of so doing and not have assumptions made as to why you would wish to surf using one of these tools.

I didn't say we automaticaly ban people with proxies etc, but if you have a member using a proxy who is trolling etc we wonder why, if they are using their university connection they are much easier to deal with (because we know who they are).

Its like businesses that hide their address in their advertisng publications, it just seems they have somthing to hide.

The vast majority of people on that site though don't know how to use a proxy :)

auric - except that people don't chose their race/colour/etc. A much closer example is someone going into a shop or bank with a motorcycle helmet on.

I'll take that as a 'no' then shall I?
I'm not arguing the finer points of human rights here - just a simple example would have done.

    Thanks anyway.

Good point about the motorcycle helmet - never used one so that example did not cross my mind.

I was wondering if people should lodge real names and address detals before using a forum or is it acceptable to use nicknames? Is that not the same as usng a proxy to obscure some of your details?

One forum I vsit has during the last few months asked (me and others?) for real name and address details and insists that they are held within the system.

No no no - quite a different subject - you're gettting into data protection and the responsibilities of web-hosters.

...still waiting for an example rather than oblique analogies.
Anyone care to help me out ?
