I've just been given a rather nice laptop by school, and have had itunes put on it, how can I load the songs from my ipod onto the laptop, so I don't have to spend weeks ripping CD's again?
    Please tell me it's possible.
The ipod is a 4th Generation one by the way

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think you can load onto iTunes from an iPod. Where were they loaded onto the iPod from (or do we assume you dont have access to the original iTunes files)

I do, they're on my computer, so I think I have to export them as a folder, and then import them onto the new one, or something like that

Can't you just network the old and new computers together and copy the folder?

I'm not allowed any admin rights at all on the laptop so I can only use it as a stand alone device. I'll have to use the ipod as a storage device. There are instructions on their website that cover this eventuality, so I'll follow them. The worst that can happen is I delete all the files from my ipod and have to reload them from my machine!

Look for some software on google called 'copy pod'. It lets you copy back from ipod to itunes which you can't normally do.

I think you either have to mount the iPod as a external drive and drag the files into the iTunes library and it will copy them to its music folder. Or you can copy the files yourself and then when you drag them into the iTunes library you will want to turn off the option somewhere in it that says to copy all files to its own folder when you put them in the library. Otherwise even if they are on the computer already iTunes will duplicate them in its own folder.

    What laptop is it?

When you set itunes up it aske if you want it to search for music files, so it must be able to do it. With a new mac you get 3 months tech support why not call them? Hope you can speak danish

You're not supposed to be able to copy files from your iPod to your PC and there certainly isn't an easy iTunes function to do it (digital rights management reasons).

You can, of course, mount the iPod as an external hard drive and access the files but you'll find they're deliberately distributed all over the place in different folders to make this as tedious as possible.

However, there are downloadable apps that let you do this very easily. EphPod is the one I use. Export everything off the iPod into a folder on your laptop and then re-import them all into iTunes from that folder :)

You need third party software to do this as its technically illegal.

However there is loads of software out there, just goto versiontracker and type in ipod.

As for mounting as an harddrive, you still won't see the music.

I'm not buying a fooking iPod then! The Archos one I got my GF works like an external drive, you can copy to and from it and it just catalogs everything on the drive.

Its not apples fault they had to do it to comply with the music industry.

The Archos is not tied into music down loads so has no such limitations

I do, when I connect it to my PC :) perhaps it's different on a Mac?? ...however, the music files are:

    a) marked as hidden (not really an issue, just change your Windows Explorer preferences to view hidden files)
    b) distributed all over the place in oddly named folders with no apparent rhyme or reason, as I mentioned earlier.

    b) is so that you can't easily pick up all the songs from an album allthough if in your iTunes ripping settings you include the track no. and album name into the filename that's created you can easily search (in Windows Explorer) for all files matching the album name and you'll quickly get them.

Essentially it's a non-issue and it's certainly not a reason not to buy an iPod. Apple have made a token effort to make it difficult to get the files off the iPod to please the music industry but it's actually dead easy :)
