First off, I'm thrilled to bits since I discovered that my 3rd Gen iPod does infact have a shuffle play feature. In a most un-Apple like fashion this highly desirable feature is accessed in a completely un-intuitive way. If you, like me, thought that shuffle was reserved for 4th Gen iPods and above here's how you get shuffle play: Main Menu -> Settings -> Shuffle ..then choose from Songs, Albums. The default is Off (why???). Then, at the main menu, just press the Play button and where it would normally play all the songs on your iPod in the order you loaded them it will now shuffle play, indicated by a small shuffle icon below the battery indicator. Result! Please don't tell me I'm the only dunce that didn't figure this out for ages? Anyway, to the point of the post: Is there an algorithm that the iPod uses when selecting songs for shuffle play (perhaps based on music type, artist etc) or is it purely random? It seems to be uncannily good at selecting things that go well together. Michael.
