I'm thinking of getting one of these now. Probably the 30Gig verson, so I can have a lot of music in uncompressed format - i've worked out that I should be able to get about 70CDs on it.

I'm going to use it mainly in the Gym (yes I joined one recently in an effort to tighten things up a bit), in the garder and on the train.

Is it worth waiting for competitors to catch up, prices to reduce, or go for a 10 Gig version an compress to 128K MP3?

Anyone got an opinion on it?

    I have an opinion.

The ipod is so far ahead of the compitition that its a closed court.

The only thing that comes close the memory is the roxio jukebox, it looks hideous and weighs a tonne.

The new ipod weighs as much as two CDs, the dock provides a convienant way to connect direct to powered speakers or direct to your HIFI.

Its tactile and works totally with apple software, (which admitadly on a PC is restricted)

It can transfer a cds worth of info in 16 seconds.

This is on fire wire of course, which you need to get the max from it. (assuming the PC it runs on is like most, running decreped legacy hardware such as serial and such)

You know you want one (I am currantly saving!)

    Cheers Gari,

How about compressed vs uncompressed? I ask as this will affect the 10,15 or 30 GB decision.

Also, how does one plug it in to one's HI-FI? I have a dac . Is it possible to digie out?

What about creative labs? I understand that they are bringing something out later this year?

...so much money to spend on a portable, just making sure.

Jshack, this is more than a 'portable'

This is a lifestyle product which you will find essential!

    Now consider this.

Do you use your computer often?

Will you need to listen to like 10 hours of music on the ipod each day?

If yes to one and no to the other then you could easily get away with the 15 gig verson. To be honest I would get this one simply because it comes with the dock, the 10 gig dosn't.

To be honest I am not sure about digi out but by all means check carefully on the website.

    www.apple.com/ipod

I am still saving, I will have one very soon, I have held it, it kind of takes you over.

    Thank you gari.

    You appear to be obsessive.

I understand that in the sates, they have iPOD parties.

When we both have one, you're very welcome round mine so that we can listen to them together ;o)

    Grumpy johnhunt,

Allow me to extend the hand of friendship?

I came to the conclusion soon after I bought them that the wireless Sennheisers were shite!

It would be better to get mobile with a MP3, minidisc or portable CDP.

Late at night the missus (who is very preggie) wants lots of sleep, I like going in to the garden, I like cooking......

bottom line is that I have lots of jshack moments when I can't listen to the main system, so private music on the move is very appealing.

    also...... try and smile more.

Let me tell you where you could use one.

    In the car.

You can get an FM dock that sits in yer car and goes straight through your car system. Now you are traveling with thousands of tunes that you want to hear.

    God damn.

Laying down on the bed (we don't have a bed room system) you could fire it through a set of the new harmon kardon computer speakers:
    http://www.harman-multimedia.com/shop_detail.html?cart=HK1_1058649836106747&sku=CREATURE&id1=1

These speakers could be descreate, plug it into the dock, lay down and chill. This would be good in our bedsroom as it ain't exactly large.

Sharing music, you could take the dock to a friends house providing they have the software and a suitable port then bang, music (although of course this is breaking all sorts of laws)

walking the dog, need I say more?

Common if you like music you will find time for a porduct which is dedicated to providing it.

Jshack, I look forward to the itunes party!

Nice thought(s) but as hard as I try I can't really justify an ipod. Gary - you've made my day with the picture of your PC.
