    Sorry I need a rant and a moan !

When ever I go into HMV, Virgin or a shop selling 12" singles, I keep getting the looks "What you doin in ere!" "You dont belong in ere" Is it just me, or do I just look dodgy !

Another thing, why do the Erberts that use the 12" singles, use them in such a way that they scratched and thumbed to a state which makes them unplayable ! They have a naff off pile of records they have collected up, use the TTs, then scratch them, thumb them, generally miss use them !

The other evening I bought 50cent - In Da Club, remix, I had to go through nearly the entire pile to get a good one because of the shear lack of respect by other shoppers !

Does anyone, know of good places to buy SH records, esp mail order ?specific ones titles I dont mean Oxfam or Help the Aged !

My best to date is www.eil.com

    Hi Levi501,

I know what you mean. The way some people treat vinyl in record shops can leave a lot to be desired. The shops can be full of pretend djs & time wasters. In my local Virgin and HMV, if you want to listen to some records, you have to ask for a stylus to put on the deck. First you have to pay a deposit to cover any potential damage.

Always hunt around for vinyl. As for mail order have a look at

I was in Fopp the other day, they have some Technics decks so you can have a listen before buying. The bloke next to me was doing the "dee-jay" thing - handling records by the playing surface as if it doesn't matter. I wanted to shoot him.

A friend of a friend came over to my place once, he does some DJ-ing in his spare time, and he copped hold of one of my records in the same ignorant manner. It was the last one he touched.

They must know it's wrong to abuse vinyl like that, so why do they do it?

Yup - HMV in Portsmouth is the same. You have to ask for a stylus and pay a deposit. I always check a record before buying from there. On Saturdays, the vinyl section is chock full of Chavs buying the latest Crappy Hardcore Technomix of Bryan Adam's 'Heaven' or whatever.

I went round to help someone from work sort something out on their home PC recently and I noticed their son had decks (a pair of naff Numarks or some other plastic shite). One of the albums he had was Tracy Chapman's debut one. I noticed it was totally wrecked and scratched!

I'm very careful of who touches my TT and records - it's basically just myself. I also have a rule for myself - vinyl and booze don't mix, so only play vinyl when sober.

I get the vast majority from my local record shop, I liked the place so much I wrote an article about it a year ago

The sign is some what a bit smarter now though :p

The best thing you can do is what my mate does buy vinyl records even though has not yet realised you cannot play them on a CD Player!

    He just collects them.

I had the same, a guy I sort of knew came over to have a listen, grabbed a 12" single by the playing surface, slammed it on the deck ! Lets just say I went mad and he never came around again.

And yes like you, I and I mean I, am the only one who touches my vinyl, well infact my CDs aswell for that matter !

Prodigy LPs can put a dent in the wallet! I saw experience going for £150 not long ago!? Its not THAT rare!
The worst experience I had with misuse was people coming round and seeing how fast they could spin the platter on a 401. It trashed the brass colar thing around the middle of the platter where they put their fat meat hands down on it and the platter sat lop sided on the spindle after that. Cheers guys. Thank god it wasn't my main deck.
