Is the headphone socket of a mono TV stereo?

This for my mums bedroom TV.

She has a NICAM video recorder connected to the TV via a SCART socket. The TV is mono but the Video is stereo, so if I plugged some PC speakers into the headphone socket would they be stereo?

I can't connect the speakers to the video output becuase there would be no way to control the voume via remote control then.

 

Probably still be mono, but i'd guess that sound will still come out of both speakers, but it'll be the same sound.

Most headphone jacks are only stepdown resistors from the main amp stage, i'd guess it would be unlikely to have dedicated opamps, but I could be wrong.

 

OK thanks, thats a pitty, I plan to do the same downstairs but that will be connected to the freeview box so at least the volume can still be controled.

 

I tested this last night by takign each phono lead out and the sound is sadly mono

She isn't but I don't like seeing a NICAM video going to waste, I have never managed to get the TV to tune in so the video provides the signal to TV.

 

Mums, God bless 'em. Forget the telly sound, she's happy as it is. Go buy her a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates. Tell her 'Thanks' and that you love her. She'll be made up with that more than if you put in a full surround system - I guarantee it.
