    ok,
a sex manual by haynes is mad enough but one written by Ian banks (the immediate mental connection with the wasp factory and complicity) is enough to warp anyone. the mind truly boggles.
    cheers

Julian, I don't think it's the same Iain Banks - different spelling.
    See here.

That would have been a little strange  .
A bit like Irvine Welsh writing a book on how to bring up a baby !

    zoomer,
it just popped up on one of those 'you have made...' pages. i'd jsut ordered 'the beast' by paul di'anno so that probably makes it weirder!

    voodoo,
i realised it wasn;t the same ian banks but when i saw the name the connection was made and it just set my mind off in unexpected and unwelcome places...

    dino,
    christ on a pushbike, 35kilos! now that's some heavy reading <ducks, runs...>
    cheers

Well - he's written a portion on how NOT to bring up a baby - in Trainspotting ;) God - why didn't they put ALL the book into the film - it's a watered down facsimile, just like Jude/Hardy's "Jude the obscure" and American Psycho/Brett Easton-Ellis' "American Psycho" (Mary Harron was defo the WRONG choice for that one - Kathryn Bigelow would have been MUCH better at it - at least there'd have been some oomph then....)

    dom,
i thought american psycho wasn't too bad. they managed to capture the atmosphere of the book quite well i thought although some of the grimmer bits weren;t in for obvious reasons and thus some plot lines got left out. also they left it in the 80's which was the whole point of the book imho.
this seems to be the problem with the filming of those books dealing with the 'darker side' of human nature. i thought hanibal lost a lot of it';s impact thanks the wanky-yanky ending and the martin amis book dead babies (retitled mood swingers i believe) i'm reliably informed is crap although i have yet to see it.
    cheers

I think Smiths are selling the Sex Manual (and other similar stuff) in their Valentines proMOtion. Look out for the pink fluffy shelves as soon as you enter your nearest store!

Well, they certainly captured the soul-less, poncy-clothed, money money money side of the mid-late 80s well - gotta love that ancient stack system (wander what CDP that is??) and of course, the breezeblock sized Motorola Mobira Cityman mobile Patrick uses to dial-a-whore :)

Yeah, it would have been really really grim if they'd filmed ALL the book, but I felt they could have shown a bit more - if you'd not read the book first (I hadn't) it made you wander what all the fuss was about.

Hannibal was OK, but what dickhead wrote the screenplay? There's no way that mobile phone would have kept that call open, while she drove through that tunnel.

Makes me MAD when physical impossibilities happen in otherwise reasonably believable films; there's grimmer in real life news than Hannibal, after all...
