Following the spate of bad luck lately (will's Teac, Powerblock, Lordsummit's deck), it's my turn...

So, a comparative listening test against the latest prototype from work and my S300 (and because until about 4 weeks time, we haven't got a place at work for listening tests). Ran a whole load of stuff on the prototype, changing a few settings, different components in places, etc and had an idea of where we're at.

Swapped back to the S300. Pop. White smoke. The death of at least one Sanken 2SA2922 Bipolar transistor. It is possible that there was a speaker output short, but there was no protection intervention, etc...

So, £19 for four new transistors (replacing all 4, 2 NPN 2SA2922 and 2 PNP 2SA1218).

    Dammit.

Bummer. At least it sounds like you should be able to fix it OK yourself Isaac.

I was worried my CD transport was about to give up the ghost at the start of the week, but thankfully a couple of plays of a lens cleaner disc seems to have sorted it out. (A single play still left it refusing to read some discs, and making a slightly disconcerting clicking noise. All seems fine now though).

Bad luck Isaac, hope this will not happen to me, I'm from the tube generation, would hate to overheat the transistors at soldering, and although it would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance, can't imagine having to carry the beast all the way to your place, (don't even know if the Eurostar stops there ;) )

    Cheers

Think there's a big hand going around pointing down... "It's YOU!". Seems to be floating over the northwest at the moment, heading eastwards. RickyC, it seems to be headed your way...

I'll get spade lugs as for the moment on the speaker side it's bare wire turned around the post ... and every time I check the knurled nut is not quite tight enough.

I thought that the protection circuits were built in to prevent this exact type of thing from happening ?

    Unlucky Isaac.

Already has matey, been fitting a kitchen, (fitted about 6or 7 in the past), and every time I say right fit sink, (last kitchen had 2 sinks so still gotr water thnkfully)then spend 3 houirs sorting out silly problems, like solder not sealing pipe right, still not got sink fitted, also various other problems that should not be happening, took off old tiles and had to relin wall, reckon I'm a week behind already and have only been doing it for 6 days, although no leave left so have been working as well, broken hifi, is the least of my bloody problems.

Anyway did you get HFbitz, hope you get your cart before saturday, weekend without sounds is not good.

It's gonna be next week I reckon, It took 5 days for the first cart to arrive, so I'm guessing it'll be Wednesday or Thursday next week. If they will just swap the stylus which is the faulty part, I'll be able to fit it and then slot the new stylus in. Couldn't believe it when I lifted the cart out.
Anyway hope you get the kitchen sorted, when we had ours done we got an operative in. he was worth the money for sure

I would demand a new cartridge, you never know the forces that have been applied, the cantilever could be damdged, your entiltled to a full unconditional refund when you buy under distance selling regs are you not?

Kitchen unfortunately had a finite budget, money spent on installers would have resulted in leess expensive kitchen, besides I'm not too bad at it, just the time factor this time, should have waited till had a fortnight off.

It's the cantilever thats gone. I reckon it's been dropped somewhere along the line. You're probably right about getting a new cartridge. Hopefully this one will arrive in better nick
