That is the way I do it too - Apple lossless (m4a). I wouldn't like to have to edit two sets of tags (genres, for example) and do two sets of backups, since my collection is growing by 100+ tracks per month and I periodically develop new directions in taste and want to re-tag stuff. It seemed the only way to keep tagging, be lossless, and preserve ipod compatibility.

Gary, blame Julian for flac :D. But seriously I do know what you mean and it probably is the most convenient solution. I just chose flac because there are so many tools to change the files to different formats, in case I want to (perhaps I'll covert to Apple lossless some day, just to upset Julian:)). Also, I was only given the G4 recently. Well before I started ripping to flac.

Hi Dev, I do not really know what FLAC is, but what is certain is that it can not add anything to the original file, and apple lossless is the original file.

I have a feeling FLAC is sort of the same thing, basically an Audio Zip File.

You are right Gary. It is just a different flavour of lossless codec, but importantly it is FREE and well supported in the Linux world at least. I think it stands for FreeLosslessAudioCodec.
