I might take my girlfriend to Paris for a few days around xmas or new year. I thought it would be nice to spend an evening or two in some nice jazz / cellar clubs. The sort where you can sit around, have some nice food lots of wine and watch/listen to a live performance of good jazz. Maybe a singer, pianist, bassist not a huge big band. ;)

The only thing is I don't know anywhere like that as I have only been to Paris a few times when I was a kid - anybody know some nice places to go to? Cheap accommodation nearby would be nice too as neither of us have cars.

Alternatively, one of you must have a nice place in France, come on be nice ;) You can be my best friend!

NB: I'm just sitting here listening to early Fun Lovin' Criminals, thats the sort of shizzle I want to listen to!

Personally I would stay away from Paris for a good while.

I would suggest Glasgow for New Year. Great Fun, good venues - including jazz. And the beer's better.

Racial rioting, the suburbs in meltdown for the 6th night, spraeding to other cities, that sort of stuff!

    Tenson,

I recommend the Sunside/Sunset (2 jazz clubs under the same management and in the same street, in the center of Paris). Considered to be among the best. Below are two links for reservations for two concerts in late December, on a buy-one-get-one-free basis.

And the Duc des Lombards, also considered one of the best. Same street also as above. Full program below (I'm no jazz expert but I can recommend Escoude for sure)

Shows usually start rather late (10 pm) so you have time for dinner before (or after, the area is full of restaurants). All these places are small, early booking is a must.

As for the rioting, most of it is in the suburbs, certainly not a valid reason not to visit Paris.

Your best bet for reasonable hotels would be around Gare Montparnasse (or most railway stations for that matter) I'll let you know if something comes to mind. But as you know Paris is no cheap experience.

    Cheers

Rioting reached the Place de la Republique and the 17th arrondisement last night. Pretty central to me!

Thanks Sir Galahad that looks good!

Glasgow might be a better idea though by the sounds of it! I will see how things go. Where else is nice for a place to go around xmas time? Not hugely expensive please, otherwise I would go the Bahamas!
